I'm bored as hell at work and am watching movies. I started to watch the Big Lebowski - under the impression I was gonna enjoy it because it's a well-regarded movie - and it just annoys me. It looks really crap and I don't see what's good about it. I actually switched it off. It was utter sh*te.

Aren't you a world renowned commentator on horror films? Why don't you watch one of those?

I've never seen it, but based on this list of supporting cast members there should be some great character acting in their somewhere:

The Big Lebowski is a 1998 comedy film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The movie chronicles a few days in the life of an unemployed California slacker and recreational bowler after he is mistaken for a millionaire with the same name. The film, known for its characters, surreal dream sequences, dialogue and classic rock soundtrack, is a cult classic.

Set in 1991 in Southern California, the film stars Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski (a character the filmmakers based on their associate Jeff Dowd), John Goodman as Walter Sobchak, Steve Buscemi as Donny Kerobatsos, Julianne Moore as Maude Lebowski, David Huddleston as Jeffrey "The Big" Lebowski, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Brandt, Tara Reid as Bunny Lebowski, and Sam Elliott as "The Stranger", a mysterious narrator who begins and ends the movie, and is a casual bowling alley acquaintance of The Dude.

Coen brothers regulars John Turturro, Jon Polito, Peter Stormare and Warren Keith are also featured...

I thought it was a fantastic film from start to finish. John Goodman gives the absolute best performance of his career. Original story. Good characters. Great soundtrack....it's got it all.

Very true.

Check this out though:

Great movie. Some great acting? Yeah...Jeff Bridges is Lebowski, Goodman is perfect and flea takes a bowling ball like a veteran.

The Dude:It's like what Lenin said... you look for the person who will benefit, and, uh, uh...
Donny: I am the walrus.
The Dude: You know what I'm trying to say...
The Dude: Oh yeah!
Donny: I am the walrus.
Walter Sobchak: Shut the f up, Donny! V.I. Lenin. Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov!
Donny: What is he talking about, Dude?

I admit I wasn't much impressed the first time I watched it, but it has become a top 10er now. I didn't get it all the first time, but it rewards repeated viewing. Very much so.

Give it another shot. Watch it stoned. It's lovely.

I loved it - especially this bit:

Yep, I own it, and watch it every now and then - it rocks.

The Dude is a washed up hippy stoner who gets swept up in a comlicated case of kidnapping/whatnot, and make a pretty good attempt at solving the whole thing in his stoned, bumbling way.

He confronts a guy who has been tailing him, a private eye, who mistakes him for one of the same:

Da Fino, Private Snoop: I'm a Brother Seamus!
The Dude: A Brother Seamus? What... like an Irish monk?
Da Fino, Private Snoop: ...What the *beep* are you talking about? Let me tell ya something - I dig your work. Playing one side against the other, in bed with everybody - just fabulous stuff.

It's also got 2 or 3 dream/hallucination sequences set to music - very cool.

This one is his hallucination when he's drugged by the pornographer Jackie Treehorn:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z423wD7c8g&mode=related&search=

That track is "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. I'd love to find that at a NoreBang!

as skinhead said. gets funnier with every viewing. many dont find it funny the first time... the trick is not to concern yourself with the plot at all, it isnt the slightest bit important.

YOU HAVE NO POINT OF REFERENCE HERE!!!. YOU'RE LIKE A CHILD WHO WANDERS INTO THE MIDDLE OF A MOVIE.

I love it.

And Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is in it.

I'm a cult follower.
I'm still waiting for Part II. If you think about the last words of the movie uttered by the Dude's "angel" played by "Sam Elliot....lets just say they leave the possibility of a second open.
