Dude,
Come on, I mean seriously, all my suggestions have been so far over the top; you'd have to know that we're just blue-skying it a bit. Earlier I suggested a 16 core--4x4 cpu configuration! Let's be real. The only people that I know who could put that much horsepower to work are either doing hardcore research, working at the NSA, datamining THE PLANET, or gaming like Cubanlord (just kidding on that last one Wink). Besides, you're the one who started all this off with your comment that Intel's only customers for the 4core would be `nuts' like Cubanlord. But you're right, *sigh* I guess that we should tone it down a bit in case somebody is reading this and doesn't get the point/silliness, or better yet you could go with the fantasy for a while. Join in; have some fun. It can't last. If Cubanlord's wife finds out what we're upto here, we'll all be in a lot of trouble Wink .

And you forget your audience. Laughing

I would happily buy into that setup, if I were monetarily gifted. (accepting donations...) As would CL, Superhero, eamo, jazblanc, Giant, the beaver, thundarr, Wrench...heck, anyone here would do it.

A few more of those on the project, and folding SETI would finish much quicker. Wink

Your cooling ideas are not so pie-in-the-sky at all; they are very reasonable for CL, if here were to overclock. However, with the coin he just laid out for the rig, I doubt he wants to risk a meltdown. At least, not yet. The time will come though. Twisted Evil

This is true. I don't foresee myself having to overclock that badboy. Everything is running flawlessly (though I am yet to test out Oblivion; have been crazy busy as of late). My PC, when pumped to the max, only shows a max. of 45 degrees celcius on the CPU; GPU hasn't exceeded 50 celcius Shocked Shocked Shocked (this is while running F.E.A.R. at the max!).

Overclocking petrifies me. I don't know enough about it and definitely couldn't afford to replace what I might melt.

Mild overclocks really aren't all that dangerous, and can be done on even stock cooling. Of course, it depends on what processor you're running, since some run pretty hot at stock speeds. *cough* Prescott *cough*.

I'm running just an AMD 64 3000, which runs at 1.8 gigahertz, and I've had it clocked close to 2.4 gigahertz with no stability or heat issues. I've since dropped it back to 1.8 since I don't run anything that actually needs to run faster.

When you start doing extreme OC'ing is when you really need to know your stuff.

Here's a funny little anecdote (not related to OCing but definitely related to Cubanlord):

I was talking to a good friend of mine the other day. He has a new system somewhat similar to Cubanlord's nascent hot rod box, Well after about two hours of playing half-life he was suffering from motion sickness and had to take a gravol tablet. I guess he was sitting too close. Wink Cubanlord, you'd be wise to consider ordering some gravol online, maybe you can buy it by the case. Wink

Okay, so let's get back to dreaming up ways of turning Cubanlord's hot rod into a real god box. I'm talking `burning bush', `parting the Red Sea' kind of god box, not your run-of-the-mill Ars Technica kind of thing. I'm for figuring out how to give it sentience. Who's with me. Twisted Evil

edit: ok, that last part was a bit much, let's just stick to existing consumer hardware; for now! mwuahahahaaa!!!

Overclocking: There really is a free lunch. Thunndarr is absolutely correct. The stock coolers these days are beating many a third-party solution, both at stock and o/ced speeds. Heck, my P4 2.8 was @ 3.2 with the stock cooler for a long time with only a negligable 4 degree temperature change.

Okay, let's continue this mind game.

His mobo supports ATI CrossFire configuration. Therefore, the next (il)logical step would be buying two ATI 1950XTXs. Because we don't know what kind of a display he has -maybe he's gaming at measely 1024x768- he might not even need one. But if he wants to play Oblivion with all the eyecandy on and at a decent resolution (ie. Dell 2407 24" 1920x1200), then... um... CrossFire might help a lot.

This next thing won't help that much gaming, but I've been waiting for a newer version of Gigabyte's I-Ram. With a faster memory and bigger memory capacity it should speed up things pretty nicely. Or he could always get couple Raptor's and RAID 'em (stripe 0), even though some tests show that it doesn't give that much more speed.

Speaking of RAID; I think that mine isn't set up correctly and unfortunately I don't have the time to disect it now. Currently, my device manager, under hardware, I show (under SCSI and raid controllers) Silcon Image SiI 3114 SoftRaid 5 controller. I think there is a way to speed things up a bit. I tried loading the Matrix Tech. and stuff went haywire (probably did it wrong). Anyhow, I will work on that during break (late dec. early jan.).

Qu tal, amigo? Am I reading incorrectly or are you really running 2GB of ram out of your potential 8GB? AYA me doli! Wink We are definitely going to have to fix that in la versin 2.0 de la caja del dios! eh? When is version 2.0 to be debuted anyway? I heard something about a pre-Christmas unveiling!? Wink

@SeoulFinn: I'm liking the way you think...the Gigabyte's I-Ram is sweet, too bad it isn't such a help level loading, maybe the 2nd generation will be better. We need to get those levels loading faster so that no distractions will break CL's concentration. Surely Oblivion will test our warrior's mettle.

Here's my contribution. I know it's wacky and I can't figure out just how to use them yet, but we could jam his PCI slots full of these (if he has any free space left). I'm especially liking the LBC9017. I don't know if they are the right configuration for his mobo, but I'll keep looking. I've seen some with 2 sockets capable of running 2core die each, on a small PCI board.

Did anyone actually check out the Ars Technica god box? It's pretty phat. But maybe we should be taking our cues from their hot rod box.
