hi
just wondering some good spots to check out in Bangkok and Pattaya?
are there any "must sees" ? never been there before
also, i read its rainy season now. is late september bad? hopefully some people here recently came back to answer the weather question or if there are any posters in thailand right now that could help with my questions.
im staying near the famous Khao San Road, and of course heard the negatives about the place. ill check it out anyway. any dangerous places or things to avoid?
thanks! |

Bangkok.. quite a few things.. just look it up anywhere.. way too many to mention. Great city to explore.
Pattaya.. mediocre beach with 1000s prostitutes.. a mall and some restaurants.. thats about it.
Ko Sahn Road.. depends on what you like. Its an isolated area with a sea of egotistical foreigners with tie-die shirts and almost nothing else except tie-die shirts in the shops they sell to the foreigners - and CDs and other consumer goods that Ko Sahn Road travelers being the pseudo-non-consumers buy up in bulk. Other than the extraordinary cheap hotels and if you feel a compulsion to buy up tie-die t-shirts with pride and wander up and down the street 50 times that day.. there isn't much reason to go there. Well, another good reason to go is if you like to only meet foreigners bragging about their trip away from home and don't want to meet any locals at all.. its good for that too.
Weather.. hot and humid. |

If you're going to Bangkok and Pattaya the chances are you'll see pretty much one thing...Thai girls (and boys) in mini-skirts selling certain....ummm...services. Although a few cool places to go in Bangkok would include Jack (or Jim?) Thomsons House, Chatuchack market (sorry bad spelling on that) for great shopping, and the royal palace. They're all pretty easy to find. I would recommend Koh Sammet over Pattaya any day of the week. But then if you want girls, then Pattaya would be the place.
Have fun. |

TB, sometimes your ability to completely misrepresent a place in two sentences defies belief. Yes, Pattaya beach ain't so grand and there are more hos than you can point a stick at, but there are plenty of other things to do. Lots of golf nearby, or you might like to hire a boat for the day, go fishing or just cruise some of the nearby Islands. Jomtien Beach, just over the hill is nicer without the sex tourist overload. You can also indulge in activities like karting and shooting, visit a themepark or six and enjoy some really quality restaurants. TV/TS caberet is also a must see, if that is your thing. Plenty to keep you occupied there, even if you aren't going sport f#cking.

i wasn't that thrilled with bangkok itself, but there are some must see sites.
Wat Arun - temple of the dawn. Its on the river and i suggest seeing it first as it pales in comparison to the others but is still worthseeing
Reclining Buddha - I can't remember the name of hte temple, but I think its just souht of the Grand Palace complex. Absolutely unbelievable. You MUST go.
Grand Palace - Pay for the audio tour. Its definilty worht it. Also a must see.
Near Koh Sahn you can take the boat up and down the river (its basically a public bus on water). Its a nice way to see the city and a good way to relax. It can be really crowded at rush hour though. Also, watch your bags. Its also like 20 baht or something. Nice "tour" of bangkok for the price. |

| Yeah the ferry is a very nice way to see the city. The yellow flag ferries are the express boats. They'll take you from Sathon to Nonthaburi. Come to think of it, there's a cool little island to the north of Bangkok called Koh Kret. It's inhabited by a group of people called the Mons (I think). Compared to your regular Bankokians, they're ultra laid back. When I was there I walked around the island drinking ice cold Singha beers. It was probably one of the most chilled out days I ever had during my time in Bangkok. |

Depends on what you want. I was advised by this one English guy to check out Koh Samet, and it was the "get away from it all" retreat I needed. Of course, one side of the island has the tourist spots so if you do get bored, you can go there.
I'd avoid Bangkok for more than a day, unless you are there during July for the annual sale.
I've also gone to Koh Samui and it was okay. A Thai guide there, though, said Phi Phi Island is the most scenic spot in Thailand.
Part of the fun is discovering Thailand for yourself. Have fun. |

Sorry if I sounded a bit terse earlier, but what you also failed to mention is that Khao Sahn Rd has become a big nightlife area for Thais as well as farang these days. It used to be a bit of voyerism, just wanting to see whitey in his natural habitat, but its gone from that to a really jumping place, especially on weekends. Also, the proximity of Chulalongkorn Uni means that students are attracted to the area as well. I have a good Thai friend, female, works for a big English school and she is a mad keen drinker. She insists that we go for a beer or twenty when I am in town and invariably chooses Banglampoo. She is as Thai as you can get, very proud of her country, in her late 20s, still living with her folks and would never dream of leaving Bangkok and as such I take her choice as a ringing endorsement. Sure, its not indicative of Bangkok nor Thailand proper (for that blow off the capital and the islands and get thee up to Isaan), but neither is Kings Cross in Sydney, Earls Court in London, Monesteraki in Athens. What they all have in common with Banglampoo is that they are fun areas where travellers wind up at some point. Sorry again, but ragging on the place is so cliched its boring.

I'm in Bangkok now and the weather is fantastic. The occational short shower every few days but it's really not much.
Try the Auytthaya day tour (river sun cruise I think). It's available from any travel agent or tour desk. They drive you by bus to the old capital city, take you to a few temples and a giant budda statue, and then take you back to Bangkok on a three hour river cruise.
Definitely go shopping, especially if you've been in Korea for a while. Styles are way better and the prices are much lower than Korea. |

Have you relocated to Thailand? Seems like you've been there far too long to be on holiday! |

| One thing I've noticed is that Thailand is no longer that cheap. Bali has cheaper hotels than most Thai resorts, it seems, but please correct me if I'm wrong. |
