When I moved to Korea last month, I got rid of a lot of CDs because I was tired of my old, overlistened music... So I'm thinking of taking the plunge and trying a subscription service.
Before I moved to Korea I tried one of those subscription services but I cancelled it when I realized I couldn't listen to the music except on my computer, because they use some kind of proprietary file format. I don't want to listen to music on my computer. My computer is for work. I will buy some sort of portable device if the music is MINE and I can own it forever.
Kazaa was great. If I wanted to hear MDC [a band I haven't listened to since I was 15], no problem. I could download it in a sec. Reagan Youth, no problem. Chico Buarque? A little more difficult. But almost any band in the world, according to my own whims. Nobody was throwing pop-ups at me to convince me to download Green Day or Boa or the Dixie Chicks. I don't want to be limited to downloading the recent music, things that young teenyboppers like but I don't.
Is there any subscription music service out there that offers some flexibility like Kazaa used to? I don't mind PAYING for music but I don't want to pay for the subscription AND have to pay per song or per album, which is what Yahoo makes you do. Yeah, Yahoo in addition makes you pay for downloading to a portable device. |

I think the OP is looking for a legal way of getting some music. Besides, Limewire is being prosecuted by the RIAA right now and has no doubt had it's logs subpoenaed. Does anyone really want to download copywrited music and other content transparently? I don't! I'd much rather use something else, if I have to, where my anonymity is a little more guaranteed. |

| I thought Kazaa and Limewire were the same type of sites and I read the log as asking for a Kazaa type site. |

it used to be a secret known only by underground elitists...but the cat got out and it's not as good but still better than most.....

Unfortunately not as good as it used to be. It's getting harder to find obscure and even not so obscure releases.
If you are prepared to hand over some cash for music then Beatport, Bleep and Juno are all quite good although very much focussed on electronic gear. |

When I don't mind paying for it most of the stuff I get is off iTunes. I'm not sure how good they are at finding indie stuff or somewhat obscure bands, but they've got somewhere in the realm of 3.5 million tunes, so it's worth a look. If you're putting them on an MP3 player, then yeah, you'll need an iPod, but if it's the only place you can find reliable tracks you can always burn it and rip it back as an mp3 to get around the copyright stuff. A hassle, sure, but any port in the storm, you know.

I actually download tunes from four sources: Soulseek, Bittorrent, Itunes, and Beatport. Itunes and Beatport are pay, and I use them mostly if I can't find the artist the free illegal way, or if I feel that artist has contributed to my well-being and deserves payment for a track I like.
This system is a way to beat out the big over-produced guys... help out the little guy. Download their music, listen to it for a couple months, and if you really love it, support the artist with beatport or Itunes! |

I subscribe to emusic.com and it's not bad. $10/month for 40 songs. They're MP3 format and can be used any way you wish: burned to CD, put on an iPod, whatever.
Their catalog is somewhat limited but has enough good stuff that it's worth the $10/month. They have distribution deals with some good labels like Merge and Bloodshot, meaning they offer pretty much their whole catalogs. Plus they've got lots of old jazz, blues, bluegrass, old-timey stuff which I'm into.
Sure, I use Soulseek and download torrents as well, but good luck finding, say, the latest Richard Buckner or Paul Burch on either of those. Well, you'll find both on Soulseek when I'm logged in.  |

why pay for music when its free!!!
I mean the muscians make their money, from radio, touring, and other ways. I see it downloading same as recording off the radio or tv just alittle more advanced!! |

Very much depends on which musicians you are talking about. I'd say that for the majority of musicians your statement is incorrect except for the bit about making money via other ways...ways not related to the music they have produced.
Personally I have no problem with downloading music (for reasons I won't go into here) but the reality is that most musicians are not earning enough money to survive off their musical output. |
