Nightclubs are not the real world.
In Edmonton I got wind there was a club in the mall that wasn't letting Asians in. I brought two Asian sidekicks along and watched. Yes, they were obviously letting white people in more than others. But still, the interior of the club was filled with Asians anyway. |

Do you mean "it only happens at nightclubs"? Or do you mean "it's ok when it happens at nightclubs"?
Kind of similar, though in the real world, in New Zealand there's been some research to suggest that CVs with Asian names on them are much less likely to get callbacks than those with European names, even given equivalent content.

As a canadian I find that disgusting, for the most part my country is known for its tolerance of ethnicity but calgary nightclubs are obviously not that way.
What I find brutal is that the cop wasn't doing anything about it. My friends that live in Calgary so say that the redneck attitude and dscrimination takes place but I didn't think it would be that bad.
Upon moving back to Canada, Calgary along with Ottawa, Vancouver, Okanagon Valley and London were on my short list to settle down in. After watching that Calgary looks much less appealing to me. |

I am one minute into viewing this and I can already tell you a couple of things:
One - I am ashamed that this is happening in my country. There is no excuse for it.
Two - When a national news broadcaster heard about this nightclub, they did a full on report on it. They also reported that people living in Calgary were not happy about the situation going on in their city either.
Three - They did a follow-up story to see what had changed. They admitted that not only did things not change, they admitted things had gotten worse.
Four - They are having a follow-up forum to the follow-up story. I am going to look for that one and see what happens.
Five - They named the bars by name in the story. That, hopefully, will hurt their business somewhat. They didn't hide like the Korean press does.
Here are the main differences:
I make no excuse for what hapened in Canada (my home country). Nor will I try to justify it. It is wrong.
When KBS does a similar story about how foreigners are treated in Korea, I will accept your post as a fair comparison. When MBC sponsors a communtiy hall type of discussion re: race realtions in Korea, I will accept your comparison. When the Korean government takes steps similar to the city government of Calgary in repsonse to this, I will accept your post as a fair comparison. Until then, there is still no comparison in terms of racism in Korea vs Canada. Both countrires have racists, that is not in dispute. In a straight-up contest between the most ignorant redneck racist in Canada vs the most redneck racist in Korea, the Canadian might even win. The main difference, I think, is that there is an admission of, and discussion about, racism in Canada. My beef is not with the individual bars/establishments in Korea that ban foreigners, but with all Koreans for not doing anything about it. By all Koreans I mean, the media, the government and its citizens as a group.
By the way, part 2 of the video is here. There is even a good bit on the impact that this video on YouTube has had around the world.

I'm from Calgary, and watching that video made me want to vomit. What an absolute disgrace. I went to school with a black guy who was very active in the community and who often spoke about discrimination in Canada. I always thought it was somewhat overblown, but now I can definitely see where he was coming from. Anyone who makes excuses for it has no right to complain about foreigners treatment in korea, because lord knows a lot of us have done some dumb-ass things in this country, worthy of giving all of us a bad name. If stereotyping is OK in Canada, guess it's OK here to. |

the worst thing is the fact that no one ever stands up for others in society. |

I mean people who go to those clubs aren't representative of the whole population. Those that do go are scum anyway. |

Well me and my sister got out of the cab and went down the stairs, ahead of the rest of the group we were travelling with, to the entrance of a Reggae party. We then passed the guy at the door our id's. Since we look so young we don't even play the "Oh you want to see my id?" game. He looked at them, passed them back and we started to walk in with our entrance money in our hand, when he stopped us and said "no". We stood there confused and showed him the money in our hand. Still getting the weird body language. Then our fellow club hoppers came down the stairs behind us and suddenly the path was cleared for us to enter........ |

I wonder though, what does that title "most multi-cultural country" mean? Does it indicate the least racist country? I don't think so. I think it indicates where by law, and through action, people of different cultures have the most opportunities to be equal. I think the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, along with a history of Liberal governments, has allowed Canada to become a strong case for the most multi-cultural. It doesn't mean there aren't fly's on Canada, it just means Koreans, Chinese, Indians, Africans, maybe can expect a fairer shake than they could expect elsewhere, especially with the law behind them. And don't forget women and gays. |
