One of the most-viewed stories in the Korean media . . . 아이고.

Quote:
On September 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China stated it does not consent to Koreas possession of Ieo Island, which is an island located in southwest of Jeju Island.

According to U.N. maritime law, a reef doesn't allow a country to have both economic exclusive zones (EEZs) and continental shelf claims.

South Korea's claim to Ieo Islet is based on the fact that the reef and its adjacent waters are part of South Korea's continental shelf, he said.

The remarks came after China argued that it cannot recognize South Korea's sovereignty over Ieo Islet.

Quote:
"Suyan Rock is a reef located below the water in the northern part of the East China Sea, and we have never determined its ownership with South Korea," said Qin Gang, a spokesman at Beijing's Foreign Ministry, during a press conference. Suyan Rock is the Chinese name of Ieo Islet, on which South Korea has conducted maritime observation since 2001.

The whole thing is a joke. For one, it's just rock that is 5m below the sea at lowtide (I wonder low it is under the water at hightide). It's within Koreans 200km line, so it's within Korean territory. End of story, or so you'd think. I think China would have reason to warn the Korean government against claiming the rock as being Korean territory, as opposed to it being within its territory, although I'm not sure doing so at this point in time is a wise move. If Korea was to do so, it would stretch its border 200km further out, overlapping Chinese territorial waters. It wouldn't be a novel idea. Japan has tried the same with one of its research platforms.

Fighting over a rock called dokdo was bad enough but claiming something that is actually submerged is absurd.
