There is another thread running at the moment about the high price of fruit here. Because of the high price, I don't eat as much fruit or as many varieties as at home. However, when I eat it I notice a really strange almost chemical taste.

This is most noticable with grapes. When I first had some grape products here, juice and icecream, I thought that it was just chemical flavouring because the taste bore no resemblance to a grape that I had ever eaten. Then I tried some real grapes here and sure enough they did taste like that.

Today I bought what I thought were apples but are actually more like pears in color and texture. They also have this strange, sweet chemically taste. Has anyone else noticed it and if so what is the reason? Is it the minerals in the soil here or is it something more sinister? I am beginning to wonder whether fruit is a healthy choice.

For me the fruit tastes pretty good here. Nothing unusual. The worst case is that it can be bland at times.

That apple you ate is a pear. Asian pears are round. Nothing funny about it. It's not too surprising that grapes might taste different on the other side of the world either. YOu should wash anything you eat though, incase for some reason you didn't know that.

Thanks for identifying the pear for me. What is funny is that it tastes the same as the grapes!

BTW I do wash my fruit and with bottled water too!

The grapes and pears here are a different variety than those grown in many other countries, and so they are naturally likely to taste different and maybe even strange to you. But don't worry about it - when washed I see no reason for them to be any less healthy than other types.
