|
|
Hi,
I'm planning to come to teach in South Korea in April and was wondering if anyone could advice on how useful it would be for me to do some kind of tefl course before I arrived?? I would be willing to do this if it would help me, but don't want to waste money if it won't be necessary or even help me. Any advice?
Thanks. |

1) Do/will you have a bachelors degree?
2) Are you going to work in a public school?
If the answers to BOTH of those questions are yes, then a TEFL/TESL certification (with a course of more than 100 hours duration) will be a financial benefit to you.
If the answer to either one of those questions is NO, then save your money. It won't be needed. |

More than anything, getting a certification will increase the likelihood that you will enjoy whatever job you take because you will have a better idea of what teaching EFL entails.
I'd suggest a CELTA or SIT's TESOL Certificate. |

Thanks for the advice. I will be teaching in a hagwan, but do have a bachelor's degree. I just thought it might help me as I have very little teaching experience.
Would you still advise me not to bother?
Thank you. |

Don't bother with one. It won't make any difference in your salary with a hagwon.
I don't have a cert myself, but I've worked with people in my hagwon who did. I think having a certificate actually worked against them because they thought "good teaching is what I learned in my course" instead of "good teaching is what my boss tells me is good" or "good teaching is what makes money for my school". |

Or Trinity's TESOL Certificate course

As you are going to be teaching in a hagwon you will probably be provided with a ready made curriculum with a teacher's book. In the teacher's book there should be notes on how best to teach different parts of the book.
However, overtime you will work out what methods work best with the children anyway.
