Hi,
My new director hasn't sent my visa number in time so I'm flying to Korea in two days and then I will go to Fukoaka when he gets the number. I won't be starting work until I have a valid visa. When dealing with immigration in Incheon should I say that this is what I'm doing or say I'm visiting a friend? This is my second year in Korea so my passport will show that I have taught here before on an E2 visa.

Tell Immigration you are coming back for a visit.
One catch though - the airline probably won't let you board the plane if you are coming as a tourist and have only a one-way ticket. |

just say you are travelling or visiting a friend...don't tell them you have come back for work just yet.

This is probably right but really does depend on the mood of the check-in man. You will need an onward ticket from Korea. just get one that can easily be cancelled.
I have come from Australia to Korea 3 different times on a tourist visa from the same airport(brisbane) and had 3 different experiences(I always had an out ticket though which was a one way ferry ticket from Korea to japan)
By the way...you will always have your problems at the check-in desk when you board your flight as the airline will get the fine if you overstay. If there is a big problem you won't even get to immigration
1st time(2003): Got to check-in desk, they told me i couldn't board without an onward ticket from korea....showed them the ferry ticket, no hassles.
2nd time(2004): Got to check-in...once again told me i couldn't board without an onward ticket. Show them the ferry ticket....this was not good enough. The check-in guy demanded i needed a return ticket to Australia. Told him this is *beep* but he insisted. Had to get his supervisor and the situation was explained. After much argueing was finally let on the plane....remember I had the outward ticket but the ticket I had was seen as suspicious that i would stay illegally but they had to let me on due to the law
3rd time(2006): Got to check-in. Was asked for nothing and no proof of onward travel(this was only 1 month ago - 3 days after the London crap when you would have thought they were being more careful) and they just let me on the plane.
So basically it will all depend on who checks your ticket and their mood at the time.....it is a pot-luck. If you get through the check-in desk then that is the end of it. |

Actually, it was because you're such and ugly bast*rd that they wouldn't let you on the plane. They didn't want to make the other passengers sick during dinner. I heard they offered you a doggy compartment in the hold but even the dogs complained.

I am in the same situation and I need to get those ferry tickets somehow...

I've always told them that I was here to teach, but wasn't going to until I had the E-2 visa. Never had any problems. |

I'm not even too concerned with the refund ... i'm willing to bite the bullet on that - i just need these tickets soon ... leaving within a week so...

i don't know how you can do it online...
i went to the travel agency www.kangsantravel.com to buy them or i went to the ferry terminal....
The thing is, i think they will want to see the actually ticket and nbot a letter of heardsay by the travel agent about some ferry the immigration official has probably never heard of |

Just buy a round trip ticket with a credit card and cash in the return part of the ticket when you arrive. |

| Don't you have to pay more for that??? I mean.......isn't there a cancelation fee and whatnot?? Soooo....wouldn't it be better to just by a 150,000 won ferry ticket to Japan.....you can cancel the ferry ticket right?? |

Save ALL the problems.
Have your school purchase a "1 year open return" ticket. It satisifies ALL the requirements for the airline as well as immigration and fulfills the airline ticket portion of your contract as well. .
You're asking to get screwed by your hakwon doing it the way you are now.
They should be paying for your airticket in advance as well as the ferry ticket. Don't do it. |
