I am still learning about the different opportunities (uni's, public school, etc.) for teaching in S. Korea. I know there's a lot of debate about which is better but I need some advice on which you think would best fit for me.
I'll be around 28 when I go. I have a bachelors and masters degree in psychology. I have no ESL classroom experience, but I work as a teacher for the developmentally disabled and have tutored ESL college students in writing. I would want a small class (10 students max) either children or adults. I don't want anything stressful.. I want to be told what I should be teaching rather than designing curriculum myself. I had a friend who taught in Korea and said "a monkey could do it". That is exactly the type of job I want! I also will be going with my boyfriend who has a bachelors degree in elementary education. I would like it if we could live together although we don't have to work at the same place. Money isn't a MAJOR issue... I am pretty cheap and don't drink often. So I will save up a good amount despite where I go... I would rather be happy and enjoy my job and have as minimal stress as possible since this would be an extension of my round the world trip.
So what do you recommend for me???
Also perhaps this should be a post in itself but if anyone would be willing to answer them that would be fantastic! I was wondering if there were private teaching opportunities for women?? Or are men the only ones sought after really? Also-- how does banking work? I plan on saving my money and would like to be able to have the option of transferring it to my bank account in the US to pay student loans, etc. Is opening a Korean bank account very difficult for Americans????
Thanks so much for all your help! |

You might enjoy one of the many English 'camps' springing up. They have lots of offers for couples positions.
Your husband would likely be appalled by how 80%+ of hogwans (private, after-school academies) are run. |

You can easily find a job like that. Try any of the big chain schools, but check them out first. Chances of you guys getting an apartment together but working in different places is practically nil unless you do it yourself. Maybe you should try one of the chains that gives you key money instead of already having an apartment. Your boyfriend might want a more "difficult" job though, if he is a real teacher, he might go crazy in a hagwon.

Privates are completely illegal.
You will have no trouble with a bank account. I have class, wish I could be more detailed. |
