I'm glad they ousted him. Toxin spells trouble. A lil' Bush he was. My biggest concern is whether or not GWB will pluck his grinkly hand in the mix. Unfortunatley Toxin was in NYC at the time and one new report said: "GWB has pledged to help him." Crying or Very sad

pro-military, anti-bush, anti-democracy. interesting mix there.

I wouldn't consider Toxin's track record to be democratic, personally. Anti-Bush, you bet. Pro-Military?...no, however, thus far it's been a bloodless coup, and I sincerely hope it stays that way. I'm looking for the lesser of two evils here. I think, in the end, it'll work out better for the Thais. At least, I hope so.

About time!!! Very Happy Paa Yai Thaksins days have been numbered for some time coming, although, in the N-East, where I live the farm folk simply love him. Myself, I think it's a good thing as maybe a new Government will be more Farang friendly.

Ha! I mean, God love Thailand, and I guarantee you know more about it than me. But jeez, can you name a serious country where that would matter? Because I can't! Laughing

I don't think it really matters - it's just the only demographic of the Thai population that MASH4077 is personally familiar enough with to comment on.

Sure, he was no angel and had some questionable policies but you can't deny he had an electoral mandate.

I was going to say the same thing. You are definitely right and it points to a trend , the last 10 years, where more and more democracies are being cut down by the sword rather than institutions of discussion/dialogue.

Why? Well I don't think at all, Bush and his policies have been any help at all of fostering a climate of democracy in the world. Rather the opposite. "installing" democracy gives others the thought that they too can "install" ......... Thailand just another example, many more on the horizon and still no end to the number of weapons, guns, bombs in the world..........

Amazing how a few tanks and armed men can "rule " a country....reminds me of that one famous line of "give me a few good men and I can rule the world.".

Is there anything in the world that Bush is not responsible for?

Time for the US to go in? What a pivotal South Asian foothold it would be. The US could help Thailand develop into a nice little economic engine.

I wont completely disagree with you and what you stated is fair. But, I do know that it was a lot more than that demographic alone that disliked him.

(I lived in rural Thailand for a year, in a time when coups were quite common.)

I do have 2 friends in Thailand , both British, who have bars there, so I am a bit more kin to the their feelings. So, yes I am coming more from a fralang tourist perspective than the average Thai in the street.

But you did bring up a good point and I would like to ask where we met? You seem to know some things about me. Smile

I work at a boarding school outside of Bangers so I actually have to come to work today. But yeah - everything seems to be closed. My mum's worried sick and called early this morning. But this was inevitable - Thaksin is really hated here and it was only a matter of time. Let's just hope the new government won't kill the English Programs at the schools here - that's one thing Thaksin really did right.

More amazing is the amount of influence some Americans think they have on the rest of the world.

Never said Bush was responsible. I just stated that his leadership and model, give a shining example to every military type, to "install" their own kind of democracy (Musharaf is a glaring example). Ignore the voice of the people and give democracy a kickstart. Yeah right.

When democracy gets kicked and punched, I look at the U.S. which has always been a beacon of light in this department. Lately though, despite how increasingly vocal the administration is about making Democracy the cornerstone of their foreign policy, they are a glaring example of what not to do.............and they lend support to every Tom, Thai and lonestar who would want to bring about his own brand of "democracy" without waiting for the ballot box or the conditions of a willing populace.....

What has he done that has been anti-democracy? I admit I'm not the most informed when it comes to Thai politics.

yes, because that is what he's all about: implementing sharia law.

Come back to planet reality will you? As if this board doesn't have enough crap about Muslims and hysteria related to Islam.
