Hey guys I've looked around the power converter/adaptor topics (no idea the difference - I'm a technophobe)
Anyway I bought this desktop computer from the USA and am wondering what I will need to get it running out here in Korea. I saw a bunch of other topics but they only talk about laptops, so here goes:
Here is my computer:
Processor ( Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400 (2x 2.13GHz/2MB L2 Cache/1066FSB) )
Motherboard ( Asus P5N-SLI w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0 Dual PCI-E MB )
Memory ( 2048MB [1024MB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Module Corsair-Value or Major Brand )
Video Card ( 2x Nvidia Geforce 7900GT 512MB w/DVI + TV Out Video )
Hard Drive ( 160 GB HARD DRIVE [Serial-ATA-II, 3Gb, 7200 RPM, 8M Cache] )
I'm just wondering if I need something special since I am a techno noob and don't want to blow up my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Assume I'm an idiot with this stuff
Also if anyone knows WHERE i can get the stuff mentioned that'd be helpful. I stumbled around HomePlus asking for converters and the clerk understood me but said they didn't have them but maybe he was just a lazy teenager. I can get into Seoul but I'm kind of a hike so if anyone knows if a major chain like HomePlus, Walmart, Hyundai Dept Store or whatever has what I need that'd be helpful. Thanks in advance if any kindly geek takes it upon himself to help me. |

your two video cards require their own power supply (you need two 6-pin power female ends coming from your power supply). Also, I would recommend a mininmum of 500Watts. It's imperative that you have that extra power for your cards. |

Cubanlord, way to not read the OP. he's asking about power CONVERTERS not how much power he needs in his PC.
okay, to the question, i've never been too clear about that stuff either, but you should be able to figure it out. you will need a real converter, not just a little plug adapter, unless your power supply is dual voltage (usually 100-240V), and you will need a fairly hefty one at that. like Cubanlord said your computer likely has up to 500W of power drawing on it, so you should provide it with at least that. if possible, find out how much power your computer draws and find a converter that will match or exceed it. oh and if anybody asks, you need a step-up converter, not step-down. good luck! |

Thanks for the info guys.
Yeah I haven't actually seen the computer yet but I assume its got everything it needs to run the power supply at least in the US - I ordered it online and of course its taking forever to ship but I can't wait for it since I can finaly play some games without it stuttering and freezing.
Do you have any idea what these things are called in Korean? Clerks definitely don't seem to speak any English around where I am... Do you think I could find them at homeplus/walmart or would I need to go to electronics district in Seoul? |

| Some (or perhaps even a lot of) power supply units have a switch in the back so you can go from 110 to 220. So, if that's the case, all you need is a new power cord. |

Our favorite techo-geeks are doing a bit of overkill for you.
You have 3 options:
1) Check the power supply that comes in your computer. On the back of the tower there should be a switch that will let you switch from a 110 to a 240 volt line voltage. If you have the switch, then just flip it to the 240 setting.
2) Get a new 500 watt power supply installed at your neighboorhood computer store. This will set you back about w50k. It is a BETTER choice than #3.
3) Get a power converter/transformer. Make sure the rated output on the box is MORE than the total of the appliances you are planning to plug into it. If you find one that is rated at 1500watts or 15 amps you will be fine. You can usually find them at Home Plus, E-mart or Wallmart in or near the same section as the light fixtures and related electrical stuff. This will also run to 35-50k won. |

Power supplies are heavy, thus adding to your shipping bill, but cheap to replace. When you consider these two factors, your best bet would be to just remove your power supply for the trip over, and get a new one put in here. With a Korean power supply installed in your computer, you will have absolutely no issue with plugging it into the wall, and you won't have to go in search of a step-down converter, adaptor plugs, or anything of the like once you get here.
Swapping out the power supply really would be the simplest method of solving your problem. |

Sorry guys, one more question, I'm not even a newb yet, but I'll be in Bundang-gu soon, and it's starting to sink in. Panic abound, strange vibrations and we weren't even to Barstow yet....
I want to run some editing equipment (computer, external hard drives, maybe a monitor, camera battery charger) And I was thinking how nice it'd be to just plug it into a US power strip and then get an adaptor for that to plug into Korean electrons.
Is that too much stuff to ask of these transformers/adaptors/convertors/decepticons?
Is it really NTSC over there?
Does anyone want to start planning a KICK ARSE Halloween party? That's the one holiday I've got to celebrate. I'll buy you some masks here and bring 'em over if anyone'd like to place orders... I'm the wolf though, I will not buy anyone a wolf mask. Boar, Yeti, Wooki are fine.
Any rock climbers out there? any gyms in bundang-gu?
will I want my mommy?
I'm full of it right now, bout to watch Lost in Translyvannia, I know that Romania has a lot more to offer than Translyvannia, but I love that Scarlett Johan... Johaneson, Johanssen. Johan's son.
Let craziness reign. |

A transformer can handle most of that but why would you drag it all here?
Your computer should be switchable. Hard drives you can re-power here if they are NOT switchable. Leave the monitor home. Shipping is more than the replacement cost.

You can get a fairly heavy step down transformer (1500watts) here for not too much money. Most major department stores like E-mart, Home-plus, etc. carry them.
Is it really NTSC over there?
Yes, it is NTSC.

Lots of rocks not too far from Bundang. Lots of gyms too. Not sure about climbers though.
will I want my mommy?
Maybe.... don't forget your soother and baby bottle. Sillyness aside, you won't be in Kansas anymore there Toto. The land of Oz is probably closer to reality. The EVERYTHING is different here. Culture shock is normal. Get grounded as soon as you can if you want to make it through your first year.
