My school wants me to head over to Korea and then do a visa run to Japan once I am there! This is new to me but does it sound suspect!!

How long does a tourist visa last?

Thanks

Daz

They are in a bind, want to get your butt on a plane fast before you can check them out, try you out illegally for a few days/weeks and then do a visa run if they like you and toss you if they can find a North American.

Ghod, I love those places. They are either in such a rush or they are in such a panic that you may escape before you are signed on that they don't have 12 days to do it legally?

Such forsight. Such good planning on their part that they can't plan a replacement with 12 months advance notice (we only get one year contracts and they know a year in advance when our visa expires) OR... such a crappy place that the teachers keep pulling runners so they can't plan a replacement.

I would be very careful and I would ask for the e-mails of MORE THAN ONE foreign teacher that you can check with.

Ask specifically about things like:
Overtime - do you get it
Holidays - when and how
Classes - how many per day/week/month - 30 class hours can mean up to 160 classes per month instead of the expected 120.
How long are the classes
What is the housing like
what are the housing expenses - your free apartment can cost up to 150k won per month.

You kind of get the picture.

and make sure that if they are sending you on a visa run that they will pay ALL the expenses (airfare, HOTEL, meals, train to/from the airport). Many places screw the FT by only paying for the airfare and they KNOW that a visa run can NO LONGER be done in one day so you have to overnight in Japan,

good luck

PS: Your tourist stamp is good for 90 days (unless you are American - they get 30 days or a Canadian - they get 180 days) but you are an illegal worker the moment you step foot into a classroom (even just for observation or training) or do any work related activities.

An American can send their passport with the 45 bucks to the Korean consulate for their state and get a 90-day visa...

which is what I just did

In reality, if you are NOT returning, then you MAY get away with a warning.

You WILL be delayed at the airport when you try to depart.

You MAY, depending on the immigration officer at the airport, be fined or detained. The fine is typically 100k won for a short overstay.

You WILL have a black mark placed in your file and it MAY cause difficulty if you are applying for a work visa in the future.

Be very sure they will pay for both your flight and the visa run and if they won't then just walk. I had a similar situation and I initially agreed to go on a tourist visa but I became suspicious when they wanted me to come a month earlier. Be careful if you do this.
