1) Changed planes in Heathrow- can I count the UK? |
Nope, you have to leave the airport and actually step foot on the ground in order to say you've been there.

2) In 1988 went to West Germany for a week and then crossed through Checkpoint Charlie to East Germany. Years later went to a unified Germany. So does that count as three countries or one? |
That's a tough one. I would count one, but would accept three.

3) Went to the USSR and years later went to Russia. That's gotta count as 2, right? |
Again, a tough one, but I would count one.

4) Took the train through Belgium. Never got off the train. Count- yes or no? |
No.

5)Abu Dhabi and Dubai? Same country or not? Does an Emirate count as a separate country? |
Just count the UAE.

I was thinking that perhaps I should only count the countries that I actually stayed over night in but then that leaves out small places like Monaco, Vatican City. |
No, if you actually steped foot in those countries they count in my book. |

I would count the USSR/Russia question as one country, but the Germany paradox is quite complex. I always count the Vatican City as a country on my list, but with an *. I mean, who spends the night there?
I also sort of count being to Las Vages myself because although I only had a lay-over there I did get some nice snaps of the Strip and even threw some coins into a few machines and helped myself to a drink. I don't care if you say this shouldn't count. The pin is in my map at home and it ain't coming out! You can't make me take it out! As for any other lay-overs I always try to extend them long enough to go out into the city for a few hours.
I took a train through Pisa and would have totally counted it as a city but I didn't see the tower, so that's a no go. They need to make that thing visible from the train station!
And I would count China and Hong Kong as seperate countries because I think they are sufficiently different and unique to do so. |

TTompatzz, if you are an EU citizen, you no longer go through passport checks or get stamps between each country, so are we to now count the EU as one country?
Are we to count British Isles as one country? Are we to count Ireland as one country? Are we to separate the Channel Islands? Howabout the Balearics?... Can we count visiting Ikea as having visited Sweden? Can we count going to Dokdo as Japan? List seems to go on and on.
I also don't like calling Hong Kong, China. It's not China until it concedes its 'SAR' status imo. Basically, there is too much difference between China, HK and Macau to consider them the same thing. I'm an anti Hong Kong, China labeller!
Howabout Tibet? China or not?
Okay, I think I've dallied about this travel forum too much today... |

When did you ever? I didn't go through and passport checks between countries in 1994. Spent 6 weeks in Europe and went to 8 countries and only got a stamp on arrival & departure. |

Wow Tiger. That's awesome. How many is that? Looks to be around 40? or 50?....... or more?
Your passport(s) must be a nice mess!
I guess when you hit Europe or Central America you can put the number up easily enough?
Damn, aren't you still under 35?
So when will Africa have some red?
(perhaps India will eventually as well?)
I remember a while back, I think 2-3 years ago, when JacktheCat mentioned his travels, I was astounded. He was the only one I read on this board to likely have surpassed your numerous destinations and visitations.
Though I guess "ttompatz" offers some competition. I assume he's a good bit older.
Wouldn't you like to be on "The Amazing Race?"
Where are you now, oh worldly one? Stuck with work in Seoul until the next trip I presume?
(The map in red looks cool.... it would be even cooler if it listed the countries) |

Interesting questions about what qualifies.
I'm proud to have stamps from the following countries that no longer exist in my passport:
Czechoslovakia
Yugoslavia
German Democratic Republic
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
(Actually, the USSR didn't stamp a visa or entry/exit on people's passports; you had a separate form which was returned upon leaving the country. What I have is a residence permit for Leningrad from the Department of Visas and Registration which would have allowed me to buy food in the city in 1989-1990. So, the stamp is actually for a city the no longer exists in a country that no longert exists. What is wild is that they didn't give me the stamp until I turned in my passport to get an internal visa for Latvia a week before my departure from the USSR in 1990. Wilder still, whoever did the form screwed up the dates and gave me permission to live in the city from 11 September 1990 to 1 July 1990.)
Actually, Latvia there raises another question. I went to all the Baltic republics while in the USSR. Do those qualify as separate countries because the United States never recognized their inclusion into the Soviet Union and instead recognized governments in exile?
And further on the recognition question, how about pariah dog states like the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey and Azerbaijan?
By my count, with the Baltics as separate states and the TRNC included, I have 26. Need to get out more. |
