Its simply more powerful. Everytime they build a new particle accelerator this same article comes out.

Anyone catch "End Day" on Discovery Channel a few months ago? This was one of the scenarios they put together.

Is it predicted to be quick and painless or is everyone going to scrambling away from the black hole/lethal portal as their cells are gradually ripped from their bodies?

It'll be all X-Men 3 up in there, Jean Grey going Dark Phoenix on some homies. We need to find Wolverine and have him ready to go Wolvie Berserk Style� on some vortex business. He'd claw it to smithereens.

edit: Actually it would be really cool if the black hole was big enough to suck up like half the Earth, but not the whole thing. I'm pretty sure we'd still be screwed, but that would be one awesome cliff to look down from.

I don't suppose they're going to conduct the experiment in early 2007 with the help of a guy named Gordon Freeman....that guy will do anything for a media spot these days.

I've done a bit of reading about this CERN facility and it's all fairly jaw dropping. Amazing technology and resourcefulness. The thing is that they've been doing all these experiments and building these accelerators searching for various particles and proof of the TOE etc. and as yet haven't found what they are looking for. It's all very interesting but when will they call it quits? Kind of like those scientists underground looking for evidence of dark matter. No results for decades but still they look every day. If the hypothetical particles they are looking for don't actually exist will they just keep on looking forever? Building bigger and bigger machines to find nothing? I respect their level of dedication. Another question is who gets the Nobel prize if something is actually discovered? The number of scientists involved in the project is huge.

Hehee. It's all politics, anyway.

As for dedication, its for thankless work, when you think about it.

I thought dark matter existed. I remember reading about it in Time mag how scientists were able to detect it; it pertained to the article about the "Dark Ages" in the universe; there was so much of this cosmic dark matter hanging around it created the stars and company in our universe today.

Now if these people are bent on harnessing anti-matter, I'll be worried. Until then, it looks like we'll destroy ourselves by another means. Unless an asteriod comes along, that is. Very Happy

As far as I am aware, dark matter is still very much a theoretical thing. Like a lot of modern day science, it helps fill the gaps and brings everything into a nice neat little package but as yet, it is unproven. I don't think anyone or any machine has either seen or detected direct signs of the activity of anti matter. It's pretty much one of the hypothetical deities (or devils) of physics at the moment.

I may be wrong though. I'm not exactly keeping up with this stuff on a daily basis.

What about anti-data/ghosts in the internet? There's an interesting concept.
