Please don't chew my head off, but I do have a question and concern about Korea.

Everything about Korea sounds pretty good and I'm seriously considering teaching there, but I am a huge dog lover, and I would have a serious problem seeing someone killing dogs for food, seeing dog meat on a menu, or seeing dog carcasses hanging in a market. Is this something I'm likely to come across in 21st century Korea? I don't mean to sound racist, but it's something I've heard about all my life.

They keep it pretty well hidden. There are more dog lovers than dog eaters.

You are very unlikely to see dogs being killed or hung up - it's never done in public as far as I'm aware. You're also unlikely to see it on a menu as it's usually only served in speciality dog restaurants. So, you should be fine.

Thanks. I did a search but couldn't find anything fitting the keywords--at least not overtly.

If you're in Seoul you're probably never more than 15 minutes away from the nearest dog restaurant. They're common. But you won't notice it unless you read Korean and know what words to look for. There are no pictures to indicate what they are and no dogs hanging in the window or anything.

OP your question is not racist.
No, you cannot be a dog lover and a dog eater.
Eating dog is a disgusting, filthy, twisted act. People that do it (barring those legitimately starving to death) should be forced to undergo serious psycho-therapy.

OMG..I hope that was meant as a pun because I laughed when I read it.

*shakes head* I'm sick I know!

Seriously, why the hell can't we stay off this topic. It only brings out the nasty idiots in people on this board.

Mark my words...in two or three days this thread will be full of people flaming each other.

To each their own. I believe Peter Singer has done some writing on the topic...you may find a perusal illuminating.
