Hi:

This has probably been discussed before, so if you have a link to the thread on this topic, kindly let me know.

My girlfriend has a car, and she wants me to drive. I have a professional driver's license from home (ambulance, limo, taxi, bus), but I've heard it's no good in Korea. Is this true? If so, how do I change it into an international driver's license, so that I can drive without breaking the law? She told me her insurance covers whoever is driving the vehicle, but her policy says nothing about a foreign issued driver's license. We're both avid hikers, and we'd like to drive to some of the more difficult to reach places.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Seoulnpepe

An IDP can only be obtained in the country in which you hold a licence.

It is valid in Korea, for up to 12 months or until you become a resident. It is not valid once you are resident.

If resident you should get a Korean licence - easy, loads of threads.

If you are not resident you will have to apply by post to the motoring organisation that issues IDP's in your country.

My advice is not to drive!!! If you are an english teacher, it really is not worth the possibility of having an accident and losing your hard saved money. I had to get a car due to school distances, and I really hate it. Drivers here will cut in front of you as they would when buying subway tickets. Too many close calls for me. And if you are American....they will take you to the bank!!! We have money trees. If your GF is korean...let her drive. Shocked
