I type in 'New Zealand Embassy' and hit search and all it comes up with is a blank screen.

CR,
Yeah, your right. Sometimes you have to try 3 or 4 times before actually getting results. It's too bad it wasn't a little better. Then we'd have less duplicate threads and new people asking the same questions over and over again. It's a waste of time. |

It's especially difficult searching for things like CIE, CDI, NFL, etc., all of which return thousands of results. |

Seems if you search for one or two words, you're usually ok, but if you try a three word search you get the blank screen. Must be too much to process or something. |

Make sure you tell it to "search for all terms" (why isn't that the default??) and if you can narrow down your search by forum, that helps a LOT.
I just got a blank screen when I tried your search, too. Weird. |

You sometimes have to search for related words. For example, if you search for NFL, obviously you get 3,000 matches. You have to use "football" instead. It's sometimes easier to search for a location. For example, ECC or CDI would turn up thousands, but typing in Bundang, or Daechi (and selecting only one forum at a time) makes it a little more managable. |

Try entering eslcafe and your topic on a Google search. It will turn up what you are looking for, in my experience. |

Or how about when it does retrieve some results for you, but then you've got this list of 15-pager threads to wade through, page by page, to find the occurrence of your search terms? Hm? How about that? Fun? Yeah, google eslcafe and your search terms. The search function here serves me right only about half of the time. |

I have no idea why you can't ask to check posts and not just only threads. |

A good search engine is actually quite hard to make. They are expensive to buy, as well, and can be time consuming to modify.
So the one on this forum is free, unmodified. It's not very good at all.
The only thing I can suggest is that the search box on Dave's homepage at http://www.eslcafe.com/ might be better. It's the Google engine, but it only searches this site.
Google has difficulty with phpBB, however, so you might not get everything. |
