By means of Broken Social Scene.
I mean, is there anything better right now? Further, I cannot see how American Indie bands can hold their own against the like of this supergroup and The Arcade Fire. When and how the hell did this happen?
My theory: The Tragically Hip was contrived to lull us into complacency concerning the potential for musical talent in the frozen north.
Discuss. |

Well you have to throw the canucks a bone every now and again. I would hate to seem them get depressed and start turning out more country music singers. |

I'm afraid the Arcade Fire can't hold a candle to the Icelandic post-rock quartet Sigur Rs. Their most recent album, Takk, is off the chain. Easily the most creative and passionate album I've heard since Godspeed You Black Emperor's Lift Your Skinn Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.
More on the Icelandic front is mm, a band which has more creativity in one pat of the drum machine than the Arcade Fire has in their whole damn album. Think of them as newer Aphex Twin, but cute and.. Icelandic.
This is not to say Arcade Fire isn't good. They are good, but highly overrated. I haven't heard Broken Social Scene yet, but I'm sure they're super dupeur. |

Agreed on the Icelandic band. Bjork is good too. Iceland is an amazing country for only having 400,000 people. |

Wait. By "Ice-Land" you don't mean Canada?
But I will look into the bands anyway. As for Broken Social Scene, definitely get your ass to Mars. |

I'd rather have Death From Above. Unfortunately I found out yesterday they broke up.
I don't know why, but Canada seems to be punching well above it's weight in the indie rock scene the last few years. Theories? |

We've always been a musical country, with a disproportionate number of good bands. My theory: it's damn cold so much of the year, tending to keep musicians indoors jamming!

Qinella,
Hey, right on! I thought I was the only one on the planet to like Sigur Ros (well, most people I know have never heard of them). I have a number of their albums and think they're amazing. Their music videos are also very well done. I also own an album by Mum as well.
I saw Sigur Ros play in Toronto last last fall. The show was wicked. They came here to Hong Kong but I was poor at the time so I didn't go. Oh well! Do you know any other good icelandic bands? A group of women named Amina (I think) played with Sigur Ros. They were cool too.

Broken Social Scene's set at Lollapalooza got cut to 40 minutes because they were playing opposite the RHCP's. Apperantly the RHCP's didn't want anyone playing in the time slot as them. Lots of people were upset with the set cut short, it was many people's first time hearing BSS, and they were blown away. |

Nah, I wish I knew of more Icelandic music. I like all three artists I know of so far (the two mentioned, plus Bjrk). Wish I could see them perform. That would be great. |

I am bumping this because if there aren't more replies from Canadians soon, I am going to have to conclude that their musicians have left the proles behind... |
