Please let me know if this doesn't belong, or is inappropriate in any way for this forum.

But, I was wondering about the little neighbourhood across from the Yongsan mall I saw when I was wandering around the other day. I was quite suprised to see several streets with those tiny windowed storefronts and women sitting around at 12:30 in the afternoon. I mean I am not surprised that they exist with an American army base nearby, but I was a little taken aback by the brazenness and the locale. (Nothing in my lonely planet about that!).

Am I missing something? Can perhaps someone explain their legality/purpose? I am just genuinely curious (and I forsee the obvious jokes about that) because I completely did not expect to see anything like that in that area (I thought us computer geeks were afraid of women - lol).

Ok. Fair enough, just wasn't sure if it was more like strippers. Thanks for the heads up.

I thought that was obvious.

You see OP, in this world some women make money by having sex with strangers who pay them. "Sex without LOVE?!" you say, as shocked as you were when your mommy told you last week that there really isnt an Easter Bunny and Santa isnt real. Well yes. Sex for money.

We call them prostitutes. You can call them whores too. Some prefer the word hookers.

Men go and pay an x amount of money for an x amount of time and depending on what services they are purchasing, the price can vary

Thanks for the info, that is interesting and good to know. Not entirely clear on the spinning pole thing, but ok. Much more useful then being condescended to about the definition of a prostitue, I figure the only way to learn things is to ask questions, even if that seems to offend people as ignorant, hence my politeness.

Yeah I knew a guy last year who went a couple times a month. Some girls won't go with forigners, but others will.

jinju, you need to get out more.

You are one of the crankiest posters on this board.

Yeah the board drives me nuts sometimes too, but come on man chill. I hope one day you get to meet a very beautiful girl by the name of Mary Jane. She'll change your perspective on life. And your an artist so you two will get a long great.

Mary's hard to find in Korea, and she could get you in a lot of trouble here. But if your on vacation to say um, Amsterdam or Montreal, ask around and you should be able to find her.

I believe that there are three main districts in Seoul.
The one by Yongsan- strictly Korean only, out for a walk one night, got lost and ended up there, got rudely chased away. Even spit on by a hooker-strange.

Another by Cheongnyangni Station. Don't know who it caters to. I was in a cab with my mother-in-law and wife and the cabbie asked if he could take a short cut. He zipped us along a street full of women in revealing clothes. Shocked my wife pretty bad, especially since it was 8AM.

Third is at Miari (Texas). Very famous and very large. It used to cater to Koreans but didn't chase away foreigners. Have heard that since the whole 'foreigners have AIDS scare' they stopped serving foreigners.

It's fun to name drop 'Miari- Texas' with your adult students. They flip. Foreigners aren't supposed to know about such places.

My curiosity is piqued- where are these places?
