Is there a name for this?

Plasticdishophobia seems like too much of a mouthful.

Fear of Plastic Dishware Grips Korea

A few days ago, Kim Yeong-ja (32, Seoul) threw out all kinds of her plastic dishware in her refrigerator.

Instead, she took out her old china she bought nearly four years ago when she got married. She is considering purchasing glassware or additional sets of china.

Kim is not alone in throwing out or at least avoiding using plastic ware after a TV program aired about harmful endocrine disruptors found in plastic products. Housewives reluctance to use plastic has a substantially negative impact on the sales of plastic products.

It's not a phobia... plasticizers - the chemicals that make plastics soft - leach out of plastic and into food, especially non-polar foods (eg. fat, oil) and especially when heated. So don't go microwaving prime-rib in tuperware, ya hear?

Thanks for the science lesson.

I prefer illogical fear myself. Way more fun.

An American couple I know had a Korean family over for dinner. They didn't have enough regular dishes, so they used some plastic dishes. The Korean family was so alarmed that the poor Americans were risking their health with plastic dishes that they went out and bought my friends a whole set of new dishes.
