Don't christian esl schools have the worst reputation in Korea? Like not being paid, long hours, your free time being controlled... I've heard a lot of horror stories. "Would Jesus want to be paid on time?" One gets the feeling so called Christian esl schools simply use religion to bilk well meaning teachers out of hard earned income in the name of some dead guy. |

A good site...thanks for the link but just a quick word of warning to the Christian ESL'er newbies out there.
In Korea, beware of the hagwons that try to pay you less money because it's "Christian." It just means they are probably making more money off of you.
A better way to go is to get a standard job (making 2 or 2.2) at a reputable hagwon or public school and get involved in a good Church. THere are plenty of English services here, especially if you are in Seoul or Pusan. |
That's some excellent advice! My first job here in Korea was at a "Christian" school that called their teachers missionaries. I had mistakenly made the assumption that since it was "Christian" and affiliated with a church, it would be a relatively safe, stable, sane place to be. I couldn't have been more wrong. The job paid almost nothing and was like living in a prison. I'm not saying all Christian schools are like this, but be cautious and do your homework well before signing anything. |

It's not just Christian hagwons. I'm sad to say that a lot of Christian organizations back home get away with lower pay and shabby treatment because they expect Christians to be meek and "submit to each other." What happened to that good ol' Bible verse "The worker is worth his wages!" |

Seriously, why do Christians have to inject their personal beliefs into EVERYTHING they do... This is a serious question (I'm not trolling, I'd just like someone to explain this concept to me so I can finally understand). Do you really feel that you encounter issues in EFL that can only be answered by other Christians? |

first of all, it's not all Christians that do this, and it's not just Christians that do this. and there are Christian perspectives to a lot of issues that people might do well to know. and if teaching EFL is your calling (or vocation you might call it) then having Christian perspectives is even more important.
on the other hand, i don't think a forum for only Christian people would be all that useful. it's more important to have opinions and advice from a variety of different mindsets. |

You're using the wrong verse. "When someone (or school) strikes you on one cheek, turn the other cheek...." |

Yeah, I did a summer camp at an LDS university. The regular professors were expected to give up their free time and commit to extra-cirricular programs all the time. Also, they were paid at least 20% less than a corresponding position in a non-Christian University, for the work that they did do, under the pretext of course - that they were doing 'Gods work'.
Funny how most of these extra-cirricular activities seemed to be cash related, with the students having to pay money to attend.
The head of the University however lived in a cushy house on campus, paid for by the Uni, with his family. He also drove a top of the line SUV and generally seemed to be loaded. Nice job, if you can get it...
I was also treated to a highly amusing story about how the dean had taken some other LDS guys from the States for lunch. Not wanting to spend too much money, their colleagues from the US decided that they'd just go to a restaurant lunch. What they didn't know, and what the dean was too proud to tell them, was that these things cost $$$$ in Korea.
So half an hour and eight light-lunch plates later. The dean had to pony up $1000+. Later on they all had a great laugh about it. And apparently it became a standing joke in LDS circles.
Nice to see that God's cash is being put to good use. But there are probably starving Africans in LDS missions that aren't going to see that measles vaccine because the dean of the university didnt want to lose face. Which one of the seven deadly sins is that again ?
Anyway, I drained every goddam penny out of those suckers. And got away with sticking them with my tax bill. . Jesus would have wanted me to. |

Thanks for a serious, level-headed response tweeterdj.
Don't worry, I know it's not just Christians, and I know their not the only ones, but I would be really hardpressed to find any non-christian examples. You don't see groupd forming for conservative or liberal EFL teachers. Withing the EFL comunity you might find groups breaking off based on personal beliefs, but never as official or as labeled as the Christian groups.
I'm also not sure what issues could arise in EFL that would be better solved within a Christian context... beyond should we teach the kids present or past tense when talking about Jesus...
An organisation of Christian school EFL teachers, that's fine, because there would be issues particular to that type of education. It's just the idea of separating off into a group that of two completely (hopefully completely) unrelated labels that bothers me.
Anyway, thanks again for the good-hearted resonse. |
