in the spirit of the the ILM rough guide, does anyone have any good recommendations for those looking to explore korean music?

this topic has been lightly touched on before in this thread, but a rough guide -- a track listing summary of a certain genre created by someone with a deep knowledge of it -- would be far more useful.

a rough guide to korean indie would be particularly excellent.

a rough guide to k-pop? to noraebang songs? to korean gangsta rap? to songs that sound suspiciously like other songs elsewhere in the world?

I don't know anything about Korean indie music.

Oh, and I've used Limewire, a p2p site, for downloading Korean songs with moderate success. www.limewire.com I used limewire to download a lot of the songs and albums I mentioned above. (Although I did buy the Leessang CD at Carrefour last year.)

I know there are better programs out there, but I've used limewire for ages, and since I suck at technology/programs, it stuck with it.

If I remember correctly "Soribada" is popular in Korea for downloading music, although there's a small monthly fee. Perhaps somebody else can comment on this: how much is it, how convenient is it, and can foreigners set it up, or do they need a citizen's id #?

the indie hip hop scene has gone real awry of late...
still waiting for someone to come along with the smarts to pull some shit together...

the groups listed above are all pretty commerical... even dynamic duo these days have gone a little commercial

The most interesting Korean music I've heard so far is a group called 공일 오비. Some very cool stuff on their newest album, my favorite song being called 간장드레싱 레시피. Each of the songs on the album sounds like a different style, though, and has a different vocalist.

One dude who I don't know if you'd call him a rapper or what, but is awesome either way, is Defcon (데프콘). It's hard to choose a favorite song, but I like the one with 자두 in it (오빠는 열아홉) a lot. His style is unique, and I don't recall hearing any lame English phrases thrown in. My Korean friend proudly announced to me that Defcon doesn't know any English, which I think is cool. "Hey, let's get the party started" doesn't improve most Korean hip hop songs I hear.

Soribada no longer exists. In its place is www.monkey3.net Even though my Korean is weak, I managed to navigate and sign up. It's the Korean version of limewire and they have every Korean song that I've ever looked for.

Smee, I like every group that you've suggested. Bobby Kim with Buga Kingz is great. The only artist I would add to your list is T(Yoon Mi Rae). She's a great singer and rapper too.

I'm currently into some Korean music. Thanks to Mithridates I'm listening to a bunch of Jaurim right the hell now.

Through a bit of navigating and looking for stuff I came across a music forum type place at http://z9.invisionfree.com/bww2/ . There you can find links to songs from china, japan, thailand and korea. If you want to listen to Korean music I recommend you go to the Download section, then choose K-pop then choose the albums section, then click on the sticky called "(DL ALBUMS) Korean Music KPOP 1000+ download link" there are, as it says, more than 1,000 korean albums you can download. They're not all pop, some are rock, some are hiphop, some are alternative.. definitely pop-oriented though. You have to register to access the forums, but its free shit. Thousands of albums and songs to download.

If you navigate their site a bit you can find "beginners guides" to k-pop(aka music coz its not ALL pop) etc.

This site was a big find for me, so check it out if you have any interest in downloading korean music. I got 4/5 of the Jaurim albums (thats including their cover version album which isn't a "real" one). The worst thing about it is I didn't find any Crying Nut yet which is bothering me no end. Someone send me a link to download their albums please.
