When my contract expired, November 23rd, I was planning on taking a trip to Thailand and I was wondering two things. First off, I have heard mostly positive things about life there since the military coup but has anyone here actually been there since the coup or know anyone that has been there to tell me how it is? And secondly, since I know most english teachers spend some time there are there any suggestions of places I should really visit? Thanks.

It really depends on what you're in to. There are too many options to consider, so how about some info on what you're looking to get out of the trip?

Diving? Mongering? Partying? Shopping? Quiet beaches, busy cities or vice versa? Give us a little help here...

And this should probably be in the travel forum, BTW.

I know a teacher who is teaching just outside of Bangkok. Classes were canceled the day after the coup. Since then everything has been back to normal. She said tourists were rushing to the public areas occupied by the Army to have their pictures taken. The troops oblige with wide smiles. Thailand is open for business.

No problems at all here.

I live here - and last week, the day after the coup, I drove from Bangkok to Phuket (900 kilometers - 610 miles for Americans) with no problems. Some soldiers were in evidence but even the two check points I drove through - no one was stopped everything was all smiles.

Business as usual here.

Try visiting Phuket - I liked it so much that I moved here.

Enjoy!
