One ringy dingy....two ringy dingies...
This guy was the best! When I was a kid, he live-hosted "The Great Money Movie" on Maine local television, where he'd call people up and ask them how much money they'd won .... if theyknew the secret word put into the movies he was hosting. This won't mean much to most of you, but for the east coasters of my generation, it's the passing of a legend. Author Stephen King was at the funeral to give some final words too.

I was talking to somebody about this guy just recently (when I lived in Newfoundland we got the Maine channels on cable).
I don't know that he was particularly gifted at anything but he was likeable enough. |

"Dialing For Dollars"!
"Weird"! (late night Saturdays)
He's truly a legend around Bangor, where I'm from. Didn't realize he had fans up north, as well. |

That was some of the best tv we could get around then. Don't know how many of the viewers were fans, but everybody knew him. Watching the "Planet of the Apes" movies was pretty special. We all got a kick out of his commercials too. Didn't his wife join him in some? Either way, a quirky off the cuff cat. Loved him. He was a hoot. |

God love 'im!
I remember him from "the Great Money Movie." It used to come on around 5:30 pm Newfoundland time. He was a hoot! I remember him drawing a name from the barrel and phoning the person and asking if they saw the secret word during the movie. If the person answered successfully he'd shout, " Woo-hoo, (while giving a Guus Hiddink uppercut gesture), you've just won $25 dollas!"
I also recall some of his wacky commercials and the public service announcements..."we'll put 'em on for ya"....
Eddie Driscoll was well liked and appreciated in Newfoundland...maybe he had some relatives in Newfoundland.... No doubt he will be missed!
Anyone else out there remember him? |
