People in my office started talking about their Chuseok bonus.I glanced across ,caught their eye,and then they started getting quieter...

Damn!

How much do they get??

It's a public high school and I thought it might only be going to permanent employees.

Asked a co-worker(Korean)who in on a 6 month contract if she was getting it and she said yes.

Hmm...are you on a union?

No.Hmm.......are you a licenced HS teacher?

Yes.

So,they get it for being licenced,whether permanent or contracted?

Anyways......I think its a fair bit of coin.Minimum 300.000.

We get to choose a gift from a list. They range from a 50,000 to 200,000 in value. However, I don't work in a public school.

Everyone at school got a box of seaweed ( just what I always wanted....) don't know how I am going to eat that much. A teacher complained that chuseok was going to cost her about 1 million won for gifts etc.I said "yes, but you get a bonus from the school don't you?" She replied "yes, 800000 ". I work at an elementary school, I am assuming that I don't get the bonus

yeah i got my Chuseok gift box as well today. Inside is , i kid you not, 6 different tubes of tooth paste and 2 toothbrushes as well as other crappy beauty products.
I guess they are aware of kimchi breath after all.

Neglected to say that a teacher at school(funny chick,looks like a Jawa,was cussing a student out then threw her stick-half her own height- on the kettle table and shouted "S-!!!....."never knew she spoke English...)
was handcounting a fair wad of cash today.At least baek man won.Perhaps a bit more.

all the korean staff at my school got snazzy jackets today and a big box of gim. when another ft asked if we were gonna get shafted again this year on gifts, one k staff shared out her gim. yay, i love the stuff. money woulda been nice though... or a snazzy jacket!
oh well. no spam & olive oil for me.

i work at a private middle school (not a hogwon) and i heard their bonus depends on years at the school, and is only given to "tenured" teachers, not people hired year by year (like me, the office girls, and a few new teachers).

I dont complain about this, as it is not in my contract, I have no special plans or costs for Chuseok, and it is not my culture's holiday.

BUT, this is my trump card when they try so say I shouldnt get something in my contract because everyone else doesnt get it. I tell them we have different contracts and get different things, for example they are guaranteed a raise at the end of the year and get a Chuseok bonus. This often gets the point across very well.

I work at a university and haven't got a thing since I started here. However, my first year and a half here I worked at a hakwan. I was so impressed the first holiday I had (Solall) and everyone, both K and F teachers got a box of SPAM...I love SPAM. For Chuseok that year, I got SPAM and Olive Oil. Again, everyone got the same thing.

Well, what everyone was getting wasn't good enough for the "senior teacher" and the "man of many years in Korea" and they were very vocal about how they desrved better and how all of the FT's deserved better because 'we' were the reason the hakwan was even there.. Next holiday, we got butkis. But I don't fault the director at all...when something isn't appreciated, then it shouldn't be given. people like that should stf up and gth outta here.

Last year I got 70,000 won...... hoping to get something this year too, although theres only tomorrow left and then I head off for a week. Maybe I wont get anything cos Im taking 2 days off work (hagwon).

First year I got 100000 won. Next hagwon I got nothing. This year... nothing yet, although I did get some really nice showery/soapy type things from a couple of my students.
