Quote:
In Internet terminology, a troll is often someone who comes into an established community such as an online discussion forum, and posts inflammatory, rude, repetitive or offensive messages designed intentionally to annoy or antagonize the existing members or disrupt the flow of discussion, including the personal attack of calling others trolls. Often, trolls assume multiple aliases, or sock puppets.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

It's somebody who posts stupid sh_t to cause trouble or to instigate others. Anytime there's a thread about banging the natives people say "it's a troll." Also, when someone is being so ignorant it borders on being facetious, there's a good chance a troll is behind it.

For further information, see 63% of the posts on the board.

Trolls live under bridges and eat children, don't they?

When they are not pissing off people on forums that is...

I don't think I would classify Spinoza as a troll. I'd say he's a polemicist (incidentally, the word comes from "polemos" which is the Greek word for war) or hyperbolist.) He exaggerates and provokes, but he doesn't have the devious qualities I associate with a troll. He usually means what he says, on some level.

A troll often conceals their mischievous intent, or says things they truly don't believe, just to watch people dance.

A sock is someone who has been on the board under one name and then comes in with a different name. Think of it as a disguise.

Some socks carry on a conversation with their other 'real' self.

Otis is by far the best example of a troll on these boards. I would have said Bigverne was too, but he seems to have slid off back under his rock.

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but when I first saw the term 'sock' on here used in something like "this guy must be that guy's sock"; I thought it was a derogatory word stemming from well, what some GUYS would do with their 'SOCKS' once they hit puberty. Glad to know it has a different meaning!!
