A day away from the end of my contract and a couple more questions arise. Any info is much appreciated.

1) My employer wants to charge me health insurance "tax" on my severence pay - normal or weird?

2) He also wants to charge me .45% "employment insurance" on my total income - normal or weird?

3) Health insurance is 3.3% split between employer and employee - 1.65% each, right?

Much thanks to all you old pros.

1,Yes.I believe I paid tax and pension. How can you pay health on a non-existent month?

2.Yes.That's a jip.

3.Health insurance ought to have been split during the duration of your contract.

1.) ditto.

2.) Nope. I wouldn't pay it. I do have to pay a 0.1% resident tax, but never an employment insurance tax.

3.) You shoulda been paying this all year, and last numbers I remember were 2.24% per party.

If he does go through with this, just contact the tax office and ask them.

Good luck.

2. Haha! Employment Insurance is a pretty clever way to not pay you all of what they owe you... I've NEVER paid or even heard of Employment Insurance until now.

someone else a while ago was talking about employment insurance, i think hogwon owners that do are keeping the money. why?
employment insurance is money you receive if you are unemployed, so this makes a lot of sense for koreans. but what happens to YOU if you are unemployed? your visa is cancelled and you are sent home. so this makes NO sense for you to have. cancel it, it is not required by law.

Yeah, tax on severence is fine, and pension would be welcome, since I'd get double that back. But health insurance on it sounds ridiculous to me.

His claim is that when an employee is registered for medical insurance, three other programs are started automatically: pension (which is true), employment insurance, and industrial disaster insurance. He says the institute pays 100% of the industrial disaster insurance, but I should pay the employment insurance (.45% of salary). Sounds bogus to me too.

Gearing up for a show down now (over a couple hundred bucks and some just-because-I'm-a-foreigner-doesn't-mean-you-can-take-advantage-of-me pride).

Thanks all.

On a 2 mil bonus, .45% is 9,000 won. $9. That's bizarre the guy is out to steal $9 from you.

Nene, are you an E-2 or an F category visa holder? If you are on an E-2 you don't need Employement Insurance it is purely optional.

I got my severance this week and health insurance was not deducted from it nor was income tax.

That's 9 bus rides! Yet another example of those dog eating, swindling, subway attacking, insult hurling thinkers that we are pedophiles trying to scam a lowly foreigner. If only someone would publish this in a western newspaper...then Korea would FAIL!

No, it's .45% of my total annual salary - that's 100,000+...

In the end, he gave in on the "employment insurance", but I ended up paying medical ins. on the severance. Probably crap, but whatever, my teaching career is over, so what do I care?! Razz
