Why don't Korean food delivery places use disposable containers for their food? I mean, how much profit can these places make by charging 3500 Won, and making TWO or THREE trips on the scooter, one to drop off the food, the second to pick up the used dishes (and sometimes they come too early, so they have to come back a third time even).

Not to mention, now they have to stock and wash all those dishes.

Thnk of cutting delivery scooter traffic by half if they would just use:

Heck, there's probably alot of money to be made by the first restaurant that takes up this practice.

Yeah! Let's use disposable dishes all the time! Think of the hassle it would save! No dishes to wash ever again......

.......might be a bit tough on the planet though, don't you think?

This was the one thing I heard universally praised about Korea, until now.

Yes, because 2-3 round-trip delievery runs of dirty 2-stroke engine (most wasteful, pollution spewing engine on the planet) exhaust, water waste, bleach and soap waste (do you know the chemical process to make dish soap and bleach?), cling-wrap waste are oh so much cleaner than recycled biodegradable paper.

Universally praised? You must live in a different universe than I, as in My Korean universe, this practice is universally ridiculed. You just have to think about what actual, total waste that goes into each process, for more than 5 seconds.

Ok, the photo is a bad example. The styrofoam in that pic is bad. I mean everything in those paper container thingies.

1. This is truly an issue to get worked up about.

Most wasteful? What do those things get? Something like 50 mpg (sorry, I have desire to translate that into km/l)? And they rarely deliver more than a km away.

Ha. You make assumptions. Bleach? Soap? Where do you live exactly?

Sure. Like using disposable containers will still require one scooter trip. And another trip by a garbage truck to haul them away. Lot's of factors to consider including subjective externalities.

1. It is. It's an inefficient, wasteful practice, where they haven't sat down and run the numbers on which method is truly saving "the planet" more--plus it's making them less money, and add to that the nuisance of these scooters all over busy sidewalks-adding that much more to total traffic, adding another few minutes to all commuters' commute, thereby polluting the air that much more.
2. Bicycles? You see food delivery bicycles even 1/20th the time as delivery scooters? Really, what universe are you in?
3. Good one.

You are indeed making a strong case. Convincing. In fact I am inclined to agree after some more thought.

But your universe is still retarded.

So you think cutting the amount of total food deliveries in this country by exactly half would have no effect on pollution in Seoul. Genius.

I know, it's hard to believe that the don;t just have a magician conjure up clingwrap, bleach and soap and that they actually have to produce these in chemical plants that produce toxic waste (which they dump into the Han or the sea).

So now exhaust makes a difference, but you ridiculed the idea of 2-stroke pollution above? Ok. Make up your mind. Also, the paper will degrade and compost on the trash pile. The clingwrap won't. Booya![/quote]

When every disposable contained will have to be manufactured (paper production isn't exactly an environment friendly process), shipped in, and out again? Look at China wrt wooden chopsticks.

I never said exhaust didn't make a difference. Just disagreeing with your categorization of scooters as the "most wasteful, pollution spewing engine on the planet". I agree that the analysis is complicated. Much more complicated than you make it out to be.

Jejujitsu, I think you've had enough, bro. Leave this country. Seriously. Walk away from the computer, get on the bus, and take the first plane out of here. Ah, ah, ah! No excuses! Just go.

Dishes are better. Otherwise, I have to sort through a bunch of different-sized containers and drag them all down to our stupid recycling bins, and if I don't do it right away then they smell. Or I can waste time trying to crush them up so they fit in the garbage. I'd rather just dump the dishes outside the door.

why? is it that odd to think delivering food in non-disposable dishes, and halving the overall scooter traffic is silly? I think YOU guys have been here too long.
Don't worry, I don't leave sleep over it. Laugh at it, yes. Lose sleep, no.

A topic proposing to reduce a significant amount of air pollution isn't the silliest thing to post a thread about, or debate.

OK, I'll defer to the daily typical "Where can I find deodorant" threads from now on.

Another factor: How many people eat directly from the delivery container? Most people I know will put their food on a plate. And they will then clean the plate. Thus the reduction of soap and water pollution isn't a valid argument.

For the record, I'm not saying that the dish delivery / pickup method is more environmentally friendly than the disposable containers. But you have to look at a lot more than just the scooters for your answer.
