Article 12 (Paid Leave)
1.Employee shall be entitled to a paid leave for a total of fourteen (14) working days during the term of the employment. Paid leave may be taken at any time school is not in session, and must be approved by principal at least 15 days in advance. Saturday and Sunday do not count as vacation days. If Employee renews the contract, up to 7 days of unused yearly paid leave may be carried over to the new contract period. This carried over paid leave may be used in the new contract period, but it may not be carried over into any subsequent contract period.
2.During school winter and summer break, Employee may be asked to participate in special classes or English camps, up to 20 classroom hours per week (normal salary, no additional stipends).
Hmmm if school isnt in session, why do I need to take a paid leave day- what am I missing? |

Sitting in an empty school and warming your butt while trying to stay awake until quitting time. |

Possible to tack them on to the summer and get a bit more time back home ( the US in my case) when you have to leave for visa? |

Yes, I have this clause in my contract too.
I took seven days during the summer vacation and seven days during the winter vacation.
You could try and have them all in the summer, but I guess that would be at your school's discretion. Personally, I would split them because the Korean school's winter vacations are really long compared with the summer vacation and do you really want to be sitting on your butt doing nothing?
I think it is classed as paid leave because you have permission to be absent from school, if you didn't have permission then they probably wouldn't pay you for the days you were absent unless you were sick etc.

Same claus in my contract (except mine is 20 days). Some teachers have to show up at the school during winter and summer vacation while not either on vacation or teaching english camps.
If your lucky like me, you don't have to, after teaching english camp this summer I took 10 days vacation but in actuality it turned into 29 days off. Some are lucky some are not but if I was told that I had to be present when no students were, I just wouldn't show up.
Hope for the best, if they try to make you then its all about trying to knock some sense into the principles brain....nicely |
