Did you read the article in the Herald about that American (David Alvord or something to that effect) who ate raw fish, contracted a parasite, and then had worms spewing forth from his ears, nose and wherever that did him in!!!??

That's the most disgusting thing ever. E-VER. It simply can't be true. I've read about 2 types of worm infestations from seafood and neither caused fatalities in this manner.

Was the guy who wrote this article on crack, or one of Stephen King's interns?

I didn't read the article, but I have read medical journal texts about parasited multiplying and eventually exiting through someone's mouth. I'm not familiar with actual deaths, but it did cause severe gastro-intestinal problems that I would guess could be fatal in a rare, untreated case. Yummmmm!!!!!! I'm glad I already ate my breakfast.

To be fair, he contracted them in 2005. There probably were unaddressed symptoms; it probably wasn't a chestbursting alien situation.

But yeah, I pass on uncooked meat.

So..keep away from inadequately prepared crab that has not been properly cooked. Sushi was not the cause here.

The oriental lung fluke: life cycle.

Cycle of parasite transfer: Oriental lung fluke Paragonimus westermanii

This parasite is readily transfered from host to host through consumption of raw or undercooked flesh of an infected host organism. In humans and other mammals this parasite can cause sometimes-fatal, tubercular-like symptoms. P. westermanii was epidemic in post-war Japan.

This is the host.

Chinese mitten Crab.
http://www.elkhornslough.org/research/aquaticinvaders/aquatic9.htm
native to Korea & China

Considered a delicacy by Asian diners, this crab has the ability to cause ecological and economic damage, as well to pose a health risk to people who eat them. It is therefore illegal to import, transport, or possess live mitten crabs in the United States.

I remember seeing some documentary in high school that SHOWED worms coming out of a dead woman's eyes and stuff. It was horrible to watch, and one of the few things I distinctly remember watching as a student. Anyway, if you have worms, one of the symptoms is a craving to eat dirt Shocked Koreans take a de-wormer twice a year. I think I'm due for a de-worming, just in case....

Is that the same crab that is commonly served as a (raw) side dish? Poor guy~

I seem to recall a patron at one of those official Itaewon dives - Seoul Pub or Nashville (I forget now) sitting at the bar, drinking his Cass and I could be mistaken, but there was worms spewing from his mouth.

Although his dialogue was gargled at the time, it seemed to revolve around his glory days back in Nam when whores were 'cheap as'.

However, I am led to believe that that is par for the course in those places...
