I'm on another forum and reading these people prattle on in an effort to sound smarter than someone else is enflaming. It utterly burns me up what kinda retardedness people will extend their, otherwise feeble selves in order to look smarter than someone else.
I can understand dealing with concretes and sensible things, but *beep*, come on "my favorite paradox is the one with the donkey and the two bales of hay where he starves in the middle". This is then followed by a 3 page argument over definitions, explainations, explanations of definitions, vice versa.
Who fucking HATES philosophers!!??!!! |

gaj livin' up to the signature..
I like what Ricky gervais had to say about a first year philosophy student coming up to a third year science student:
P (S)tudent: Hey mate, that table isn't there.
S (S)tudnet: what?
PS: yeah...that table isn't there.
SS: It ISN'T there? Can you feel that <slams head onto table>.
.....
and then his beret falls off. |

My undergrad is in philosophy, and I know exactly what you're talking about- the dominant philosophers and philosophies of the past several hundred years have been completely useless. There are some definite exceptions: Ayn Rand, John Rawls, some super important logicians whose names escape me right now, and a few others here and there.
But let's face it: most of the works of the past several hundred years have been existentialism and post modernism. Before them, the task of philosophy was to solve real problems about reality and how people should live within it. Now it's to "prove" that there are no answers and that we can be sure of nothing- it's no surprise people feel resentment and scorn for philosophy.
But please don't hate all philosophers because of a few morons. |

Do I hate philosophers? Well, the question isn't as simple as you attempt to frame it.
First, you need to define philosopher. Is a person on an Internet forum engaging in a debate waxing philosophical truly a philosopher, or merely a fan of debate who knows some formal rules?
Second, you must define hate. That in itself could be a debate, but since you are the one asking the question, it's up to you to offer a definition, and us to respond to it accordingly.
Get your ducks in a row, then maybe your question will be answerable.

Impressive troll or really stupid? You decide. (But, hint to poster - the Ayn Rand plug gets me leaning both ways at once!) |

It's not about where I went to school- just look at some of the big names: Kant, Hume, Heidegger, Derrida, Nietszhe, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Foucault... need I go on?
Now consider: a) how large an influence on philosophy these thinkers had, b) what their conclusions were, and c) what legacy they left after them, i.e. how they changed the field of philosophy. |

The burden of proof is on you, my friend, to show how the enlightenment and everything since has been 'completely useless' 'existentialism and post modernism'. |

Philosophers? Yes and apparently moreso every minute.
However, when you're talking about wannabees, are you talking only philosophy wannabees or ALL wannabees? Does that include philosophic wannabees? Or, are we talking about wannabee philosophers?
Ah who cares?! Yes, hatred of them all. |

Rand was nothing but a hateful little bigot who was rightfully panned by serious philosophers. Anyone who hails her is a small minded fool.
"Specifically, she stated that "there is a psychological immorality at the root of homosexuality" because "it involves psychological flaws, corruptions, errors, or unfortunate premises."
"Rand stated that women are not psychologically suited to be President and strongly opposed the modern feminist movement."
"Rand defended the right of businesses to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and race."
"Within analytic philosophy, the dominant philosophical movement in the English-speaking world, Rand's work has been mostly ignored. No leading research university in this tradition considers Rand or Objectivism to be an important philosophical specialty or research area."
"Rand's novels, when they were first published, "received almost unanimously terrible reviews"[18] and were derided by some critics as overly long and repetitive philosophical tracts interspersed with low-quality melodrama."
"Scholars of English and American literature, with a few exceptions, have largely ignored her work." |
