The Carolina Hurricanes have traded the rights to defenceman Jack Johnson and defenceman Oleg Tverdovsky to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenceman Tim Gleason and centre Eric Belanger. The Hurricanes were in need of some immediate defensive help after losing Aaron Ward to free agency and Frantisek Kaberle to shoulder surgery. Johnson did not want to sign with Carolina this season because he wanted to return to the University of Michigan.

Gleason is solid.. but still great trade for LA IMO...
If Johnson lives up to the hype, it's going to be one of the more lopsided trades in recent memory..
Eric Belanger to fix their offensive woes? bitch please. |

Unless there's something about Johnson that only Carolina knows. Maybe something came up during training camp this preseason, who knows.
To be sure, they didn't really need to give up all that defensive talent. Seems a bit wasteful, especially this early on in the season.
Wouldn't be so quick to write off Carolina here.

I think that Carolina could have gotten so much more in this deal for a top tier D prospect. Word around the league was that he was desparate to deal Johnson given the injury to Kaberle. The two players he received in return have limited ability at best and will only play secondary roles in their careers. When you give up a young talent with vast potential you shoudl at least get something comperable in return. That's just my opinion! |
