Hey everyone,
I've been reading posts on this website for a couple of weeks now as I'm looking at some positions in Korea.
I'm pretty excited about the opportunity to teach in Asia once again, but have a few qns I hope some of you can help me with.
1. I've had over 2 yrs teaching expce to non english speakers in Indonesia and about a yr of teaching back home. My qn is how much should I consider to be a fair salary to request? (I do not have an esl qual) I do have a 4 yr English Lit degree.
2. Has anyone had experience w NetKorea & if so, are they considered a good recruiter? What other ways would you suggest I seek out a good position if I don't go thru a recruiter as I know many teachers say not to go thru them. Just look @ jobs posted on the internet?
3. Areas to live: I place a strong emphasis on where I live as I do a lot of outdoor sports/activities. Also love being near beaches...any recommendations?
4. If I can get a salary of around 2.4 KRW +/- , and I live fairly economically, how much could I reasonably expect to be able to save/send home on a monthly basis? (I don't smoke and drink only occasionally). Not a party animal!
Looking fwd to some constructive feedback ..Thanx

2.0 - 2.2 KRW is what you can typically expect as a newbie here in Korea without extra qualifications like your TESOL cert. For most hakwons you are just a business expense so they will do their best to get new meat as cheaply as possible.
2. Has anyone had experience w NetKorea & if so, are they considered a good recruiter? What other ways would you suggest I seek out a good position if I don't go thru a recruiter as I know many teachers say not to go thru them. Just look @ jobs posted on the internet?
They are just another recruiter. Some have has good experience with them. Some have not. As long as you know what a recruiter is - simply an introduction (new meat, meet school - school, meet new meat) paid for by the school then you will be fine. They introduce, get paid and leave. that is their job. Nothing more.
3. Areas to live: I place a strong emphasis on where I live as I do a lot of outdoor sports/activities. Also love being near beaches...any recommendations?
South or east coast for beaches. Anywhere else for mountains.
4. If I can get a salary of around 2.4 KRW +/- , and I live fairly economically, how much could I reasonably expect to be able to save/send home on a monthly basis? (I don't smoke and drink only occasionally). Not a party animal!
On an average of 2.4 I can tell you that I would be saving about 1/2-3/4 and I do NOT live a frugal life.
This one is certainly very subjective but you can have a pretty good lifestyle here on about a mil per month and send the rest home. You can be very frugal and live on ~500k per month and not be uncomfortable (dinners out ocassionally, highspeed internet at home, digital cable TV, weekend travelling and a holiday out of the country once a year).
Looking fwd to some constructive feedback ..Thanx

I am trying to find a job in Korea and have applied to a lot of jobs at Dave's ESL Cafe and other site which I came across but in evry case they just vanish after 2-3 replies. No body even care to say what is the reason. If any one can help me finding a job for ESL Teacher. I have a more than decade experience teaching in various subjects in Canada and India and I am a Canadian Citizen with ESL & TESOL Certification as well. |

Ok... long and short of it...
You have TESOL certification but you didn't say if you had a Bachelors degree from a Canadian Uni. If you do NOT have one, then you can't get a work visa.
If you do have one, then the last hurdle you will have to cross is the racist one. Keep trying or wait for the public schools to start hiring again in Jan/Feb. |

It will probably NOT be OK. It must be from an accredited university in one of: Canada, USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. This is an immigration rule. |

I can also gurantee you that race will play a HUGE part in this battle of yours. You may not realize it, but if you manage to sort out the degree issue, be ready for the race issue. 2-3 intrested e-mails may come your way, and then nothing.I've been experiencing the same. Read the African American's emplyed in Korea??? post. From what I hear, it's better to go to a public school. Keep your head up, and keep applying. Be ready for disappointment, but it has been done. You never know...you might be the next lucky minority teaching English in Korea. ----> The operative word of course...being lucky. |
