Can the OP edit the first post to include the closing date for submitted photos please! |
Done - It'll be December 17th. December 17th seems random, but it's during my December holiday trip home and I'll have time to deal with judging issues then. And it'll give entrants the chance to get some photos during a season that's something like winter. |
Thanks. |

There's a long history of foreigners taking photographs of Korea. How long? Well, since the Korean War. No, not THAT one, but the first US-Korea battle, in June 1871. The American expedition that tried to force the Koreans to open up to Western trade took with them one of the most famous photographers of the day, Felice Beato, a British citizen then based in Japan.
The remarkably clear photos of that would-be trade mission that turned very bloody are available here:

In the collection are photos the collector claims to be the first photographs of a Korean, ever. |

No, the initial flood was people uploading the greatest hits of their portfolios taken over the last two years, since the last contest. Now that that's past, they'll come in on an "I just took this" basis far more slowly, until December. I predicted this. Happened last time too. |

EDIT: Just approved a nice set a few minutes ago. |

Photo question, how do I put a watermark on a photo?
Are they meant to be visible? |

I'm glad the others are approving the photos regularly, cause I haven't - sorry I've been a crack mom to it lately.
Loving some of the recent uploads. Huffdaddy has several stunners, and I'm not normally a fan of "here's a closeup of a bug" shots, but this one by Callan brings art to the genre.
It's lots of fun to dip into the hundreds of photos. Every time I sift through I come across gems that have been overlooked by the viewcount hordes. There are some real treasures in there. |

Thanks, Lemon.
I've got to say that even if I wasn't in the competition I would visit the site regularly just to see what was happening. I think some of you guys who shoot digital should keep an eye on this mag and submit next year when their competition rolls around again.

Here's a thought ... if you're going to leave comments saying that a photo "isn't great", at least explain why. I can take criticism, and I understand that everyone has different tastes in photography, but random comments with no explaination aren't helpful or useful. I guess I should apologize for the somewhat snide nature of my comment, but I was a little annoyed at the time.
You can see here.
edit: I would also like to point out that this same "not great" photo has been received quite favourably by people who are skilled photographers on Flickr, and it has been favourited quite a bit as well. |

That's just how some people are. They probably don't realize the impact of their words, or the value of tact. I doubt they mean offense. Honestly, if they're not giving you the courtesy of a meaningful comment - not necessarily positive, just intelligible and constructive, they don't deserve your attention.
FWIW, I *like* the photo quite a bit. Usually those lantern pictures are taken in darker settings with the red lanterns glowing. I like that this one is different. There have been some mediocre photos uploaded (like some of mine), but that's not one of them. |

I completely agree. It works the same way with the compliments. I sometimes feel bad that all I can say is "I really like this" or "great shot"...sometimes there is an intangible quality to the photo and that is all I can come up with.
Something else that has been on my mind is that some of the photos could really use some touch-ups. People complain about light or noise and if you don't have the gear to deal with that then it can be difficult to "develop" the digital stuff. Is there something the "haves" can do for the "have nots" ? I'm not suggesting doing HDRs or composites, just basic developing. |

I'm having problems with the 400kb cap. I've got some pictures from last week and I don't want to cut some of them down to that small. |
