I am about to leave for Korea in a month and I was wondering will I be able to find typical produce in the U.S. over there? You know, typical plant food such as brocolli and apples. I've heard it is very westernized so I should have no problem, right?
Also, do they have health food stores over there?
Thanks!

Not to worry.
Fresh fruits and veggies are everywhere here. You'll probably end up walking past 3 or 4 shops between your home and your job. You'll see many of the same that we get at home: potatoes, carrots, bell peppers, onions, celery, broccoli is getting common, about 200 varieties of lettuce and salad greens...and a very large assortment of unidentifiable veggies.
If you are in a bigger city, health stores will be available.
But don't worry. You are coming to the land where 'X is good for health!' (X being every single Korean food) |

It's here but there is a lack of variety compared to back home.
Apples? Sure. Korea has one kind of apple. Okay, for about a week in July you can get green apples, but usually it's just this one type of red apple. About $1 each.
Onions? Again, mostly just one type of rather plain white onion. Sometimes you'll see purple onions.
If you're like me and you eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, you'll do fine here but you won't get the wide variety you're used to. |

I like Korean apples. I agree with what others said about the expense and lack of variety, though.
There are a few health food stores in and around Seoul.
Don't worry. |

If you live in Bundang it won't be a problem. I used to live in Yatap which was right next to the huge Moran Market--they have lots of really fresh produce there. |

Kora has about the sam slction of produc that I'd xpct to find in a 3rd world country. It's one thing that prptually pisss m off hr. It's impossibl to find bananas that arn't alrady 30% black and bruisd, orangs and appls ar about $7 for 6, and th vgtabl slction consists of lik potatos, carrots, onions, cauliflowr, broccoli (th last two of which are usually low quality), lots and lots of grn and rd ppprs, cabbag, lttuc and that's about it. Somtims asparagus. Say goodby to bans (unless you lik rd bans that you can boil for 15 hours and thy'r still hard), pas, brussls sprouts, squash, zucchini, most typs of lgums and nuts, okra, parsnips, chivs, jalapnos, artichoks, ggplant, collard grns, mustard grns, clry, yams, and th bans ar worth mntioning again bcaus that's what I miss th most.
Kora is dfinitly not th produc lovr's paradis. |

The quality and price depends on the season!
You'll be able to find many of the foods you can find at home, but yeah... most will be a bit more expensive... then there are some things that are cheaper like tomatoes and cucumbers.
You can find the produce in grocery stores, the outdoor markets (local produce), and fruit stores. All pretty rampant in Korea.
Good luck! |

I've never had any troubles finding produce here. The markets have good variety and decent prices. Department and box stores maybe not so much. If you learn to think outside your Western Veggie box you can find and enjoy loads of healthy yummy greens. Also loads of beans and dried grains. |

Has anybody passed on the fruit and veggies since they're so expensive and just died, yet? Or, better put, do you feel a lack of fruit and vegetables in your life for their being prohibitively expensive and you're a tightwad? And, as a result, are now deceased? |

Never. Kimchi pretty much takes care of my daily veggie intake. Fruits maybe, but I think they are pretty reasonable. I get it from the old grany's tiny fruit stand off the street and get it pretty cheap. I think she loves me.......... like her son. |
