Well, I am new to the Seoul region, and am sure there's gotta be someplace that sells electronic music programs, mixers, MIDI controllers, that kind of stuff. If so, where is this place? Basically, in Canada you could find a good Tom Lee to have a large section of electronic music / DJ related stuff. I am looking to buy a new expensive program, and would rather purchase it in person than get it shipped. Also, I like to browse once in a while...

Does such a place exist in Seoul, or Korea for that matter?

The place you want to go to is Nak Won market. Its really easy to find, located downtown between Insadong and Tapgol park (Jongno Sam-Ga station i believe). The place is filled with lots of litte shops all selling the same stuff, so you may need to browse around alot. If you go up to the third floor, you will find some computer music/midi specialists where you may be able to find what you are looking for. i don't know what genre you are trying to produce, but i use freeware and shareware and have had some pretty satisfactory results... seriously there are a lot of developers out there... if you are online you don't need to buy anything

i advise trying to find these:

Audiomulch (the trial is so long that it's virtually freeware/shareware, i think you'll probably want to buy it though... at least once you get going with it. the only thing that it really lacks is a way to sequence VSTi's but you can always download PQN VSTi sequencer which is free... you just have to write your melody outside of the main program)

Plogue Bidule (this is pretty similar to Audiomulch, at least that's what i have heard... it will host just about any VST effect and has a sequencer for VSTi's.

ReNoise (this is billed as the first modern/MIDI (?) tracker, it supports VSTs, VSTi's and DX (i think)... the interface seems a little too much for me... i have heard that Venetian Snares uses it quite a bit and they have been rivalling Squarepusher and Aphex in the Drill N Bass, Glitchcore arenas...

anyone of those hosts is cheap or basically free... i suggest avoiding Cubase and Fruity... just my opinion here, but it seems like too many people already use them... plus Cubase is too techy... Fruity seemed OK but after working in Audiomulch being able to do modular routing... well, Fruity isn't that appealing anymore... there's Reason also... but i am not able to comment on that...

Audiomulch also uses a "Metasurface" that you can save automation snapshots in... so when you roll your mouse over a point on the grid it will interpolate several values... it's like a makeshift MIDI controller... many Audiomulchers actually use the program as an extended FX component by routing live stuff through it... guitars, drum machines, etc. if i still had some of my hardware i would try that out...

i have heard good stuff about Ableton Live... i recently got a copy of Ableton Lite with my M-Audio Triggerfinger... i have yet to use either though as my music laptop may have just bought the farm

let me know what you decide on, if you need any advice on using Audiomulch or finding some good VSTs/VSTi's just ask...

i may be willing to sell my TriggerFinger too...

Hi chaz. Well, I work mainly with Soundforge and Reason 3.0. You can listen to my tracks on my link here if you'd like. But yeah, having tried Ableton 6 out, I'd say that is the only thing I need in addition to Reason.

However, I think fruity is not a pro kinda program... never liked it. As for Cubase, I actually have it but never use it. Just prefer Reason.

But really, the only thing I think I need is Ableton live. Your able to not only produce with it (I will prolly just use it to make a few sounds here and there to put into reason later) but you can play your tracks live with it... seamlessly.

I just upgraded to Ableton Live 6 the other day (have been using it since version 3) It's an amazing app. I don't think there are any distributors for Ableton in the Nak Won market though.

I had checked it out before when i upgraded to Live 5, I ended up having to go the download route and had the boxed version shipped to my address in Canada. If you download it, the only thing you don't get right away would be the sample library and a printed manual.

I use Reason as well, usually rewired into live. It's a great combo.
Getting Live 6 is a wise choice... you wont regret it!

That sample library looks pretty sweet. I don't want to miss out on that, so that's why I want to buy the box in person. It doesn't look like there is an option for me to download and get the sample library, so I think I need to wait for it to appear in Korea.

Borderline criminal the prices they charge for that software.

I'm not boasting at all, but I d/led Vegas 6, Pro tools M-Powered, Finale 2006, Abelton live and Reason 3, all with full libraries and patches some time ago. Of course, I will recieve no service, nor will I be able to update at a much lower cost, but still, I can't bring myself to pay 760,000 won for a program.

FYI, there are a lot of libraries avaliable on the networks.

Logic Pro and of course Ableton.. there's really no comparison.. Reason is good for some specifics.. but Logic and Ableton really have it together.. However, for sounds, I recommend the Spectrasonics programs. Outstanding. Probably the best virtual instruments around..

BTW, with the academic discount for Logic Pro, you can get it for 499. You can get Ableton academic for 299 (with the sound library.) I recommend Sweetwater Sound (www.sweetwater.com.)
