Thought some people here might be interested in this article appearing today in the NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/30/opinion/30harris.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
It discusses similarities between the debate and laws passed in Rome following pirate attacks on Ostia in 68 BC which led to the fall of the ROman Republic, and the current response to 9/11, including laws currently being debated in the US Senate. Interesting reading. |

Woland,
Thanks for the link/article. Good reading and I am always open for historical and relevant parables/examples for our own time(s).
I could comment on much but it begs us mostly to ask the question, "why , if the moral and right thing to do is so important, why do we subvert our very own values and instruments of those values? Why do we not stand fast in our "right" ? -- I think the reason is, that the easiest thing to do is to go for the power grab, the easiest answer is violence, the easiest message is "let's clean house / we've cleaned house".
A civil society takes a longer approach, the right approach. Each man judged as if innocent, each man of worth, each man able to pursue possibility (which is true freedom).
The article's most revealing and relevant line (to the present) for me was;
| Quote: |
| Even allowing for Pompeys genius as a military strategist, the suspicion arises that if the pirates could be defeated so swiftly, they could hardly have been such a grievous threat in the first place. |
This seems so evident as to be farcical BUT so many don't see it as so. Why? The live puffed up and in illusion, emotion and not in the logic of the world......

Junior,
From now on, I will be your cowhide brander. Each time you post, I will stamp it with IDIOT. .....
You have confirmed so much and so thoroughly, you have nothing intelligent to add to debates/conversation other than hate and by generalization IDIOCY.
You should figure out how full of illusion you are......ideological fodder is what those in power would call you. Pinochio..

Killings of Christians for their faith in Muslim countries is a widespread and accelerating REALITY. Open your eyes, blind man.
http://www.omdurman.org/crucify.html
Nigeria:88 Christian Villages destroyed in six weeks, 100,000 homeless
http://www.biblenetworknews.com/africa/082002_nigeria.html
2 million Sudanese christians killed by Muslims since 1998
Somali christian convert shot in back
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=52004
Every muslim knows that world domination, by conversion, infiltration, or force, is the aim of their religion. And they are getting there rapidly thanks to the wilful ignorance of people like yourself.
Every country on earth comes under one of these categories:
a) Small minority of muslims:
But rapidly increasing under the benign guise of immigration or through higher than normal birth rates.
b)Significant minority of muslims:
Able to cause massive damage to the country's infrastructure, economy by acting as one. Able to cow and dictate the majority by threatening violence should even one of their number be harmed (think: killer bees)
c) Muslim majority:
Many countries have reached this phase in the past 50 years.
As soon as this occurs, Islamic government slowly but steadily persecutes or ethnically cleanses all non muslims. think: Sudan, Nigeria.
d) Totalitarian islamic state:
Allows no other religion by law. Sponsers the spearheading of Islam by terror in other countries. Think: Saudi Arabia.
You are in denial. Along with many other people on here. Islam is a hydra, a cancer, a virus, a gigantic globalised triffid that is rapidly spreading and extinguishing freedom and human dignity wherever it goes.
And it is helped by people as wilfully ignorant as you. |

Our current enemy can not be defeated swiftly though, and we have not subverted any of our values. We are fighting to crush a threat that threatens the entire world.
Islamic Extremism/Terrorism
Not swiftly defeated. It will be a long war, and you are an idiot if you want to paint them as not a threat. They have killed thousands and continue to get more advanced.
In this age of arms profileration, especially nuclear, we can not afford to not fight them.
To do otherwise is to be foolish. We can not wait for them to strike again, and to suggest otherwise is foolish. |
