Oh great, now I'm really worried. Has anyone managed to last the year WITHOUT getting sick????? That was my goal until I read all this.
I've been here a month and so far only a slight cold and laryngitis for a day, but I know what I can look forward to now!

apart from food poisoning maybe 2 years ago, i DON'T GET SICK here. i just don't. either i'm made of stronger stuff, or i gave my immune system a lot of practice when i worked with at-risk adults, junkies, people with AIDS etc. back in vancouver.

From February-May I kept getting tonsillitis and was tired most of the time. I suspect near the end of it I also got a case of bronchitis and laryngitis, and finally asked the hospital to test me for mono. Turns out that's what it was.

Food poisoning + Alcohol poisoning.
I'm not sure which it was, it could have been both!

Bronchitis/walking pneumonia
Cracked ribs - scooter
Broken thumb - hockey
Broken finger - hockey
Middle ear baurotrauma - diving

The worst I've been sick though was when I had dysentery in the Philippines. I never thought you could shit yourself to death.

Yikes, I'm grimacing with every thing I read on here. I've never experienced anything too traumatic like this, have never had food poisioning and would like to keep it that way.

that makes no sense.

yes it does. you work around sick people, you get exposed to antibodies. your immune system compensates. before i got that job i got sick all the time. 1 year into it, i just stopped getting sick altogether.

everyone i was around was sick as hell. i never got immunized except for hepatitis. i'm fine. i don't get flus, i don't get colds, i only get sick if i'm careless (hangovers and food related discomfort).

Just near the end of my first contract I developed a fever. I had a sore throat and a cyst in my armpit. Had the fever for a week, it was steady around 102-104.

My doctor gave me those bottles of anti-biotics everyday and kept telling me to come back, by the end of the week he looked worried and asked me to do a urine test.
"Yep thought you looked a bit yellow, I need a blood test" He rushed the blood test. I found out the next day my liver enzymes were at 240 and 320
(maximum of 40 and 50)!! I spent the next two weeks in hospital.
The doctors at the hospital kept putting ice on me the first couple of days. They fixed my liver fairly quickly but in so doing gave me a wicked drug rash. My waist down was really blotchy red. Worst my dad has ever seen, he's a nurse.
My girlfriend at the time (wife now) took really good care of me bringing me food and keeping me company.
I was lucky I had comprehensive medical insurance, the bill was over 3 milion won!
