I would love to hear anything you've got to say on either Busan or this school. It is a brand new school, so it's going to be insane getting this started, but is it honestly that hard for a hard working guy like myself to succeed at a new school that I know very little about? I'm doing as much research as I can, but I just thought I'd throw this out there.

Ah I wish I could post my contract on here for ya, but my computer sucks big time. It's a pretty decent one with all of the benefits people usually have, and it pays 2.1, so no complaints about that really. They have been kind of changing some things in it a little on me though. Like it was 2.2 when the job was offered, and magically went down to 2.1. Also they now offered to let me stay with a korean teacher and her husband for the first month, but I get the idea they may not have a place for me to stay yet and that's why they're doing this. They also want me to maybe teach at another school one day a week or somethin, so hopefully I don't get caught up in some kind of split shift type thing. Anyways, time to get back to packing and figuring out what I need to bring. I wish I was a tougher guy and just brought one bag, but I think I'll be bringin a whole bunch of stuff instead.

yeah man, the teaching materials for E Bo Young's Talking Club are total *beep*
I don't even bother to look at the answer keys half the time any more, since it's obvious that whoever made them had no *beep* idea what he was doing
And the "master level" tests are a joke, they're written entirely in konglish and they all have 2-5 questions that are complete nonsense and have no reasonable answers

I also worked at an E Bo Young - Talking Club and can tell you the curriculum is crap. There are just too many errors in it and the topics are just too advanced for young kids. I was expected to spend over 2 hours a day just on making supplements because the Ebo Young books were so horrible.
My director was bat crazy and would come into my class while I was teaching and start critisizing me for not teaching correctly.
Then there was the time my director withheld 200,000 won of my pay for no reason. I got pissed and made a BIG STINK about it in front of the students. I guess she feared losing students because that missing money appeared really quickly after I did that.
Also, my Korean co-teachers were teaching Phonics, but couldn't actually pronounce what they were supposed to be teaching.
The mandatory training they give is a total waste of time.
PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and RESEARCH the specific EBO Young School before you decide.
Good luck. |

My wife worked for E Bo Young - Talking Club for about two weeks before she quit. She said the books were just totally retarded and there was no way kids could learn a thing from them. |

ah terrific, i already accepted the job so this should be fun. it's a brand new school, so i guess there wasn't much research i could have done. i've heard so many bad things about teaching english in korea, it can't possibly be that impossible can it? ah well.
peace, andrew

No, it's not at all impossible. Good books help though. Just don't rely on the books. Teach the grammar points in them, but do so through other means - not just going through the book page by page. |

so even if e bo young's curriculum is all outta wack, my effectiveness and sanity as a teacher will probably depend more on what materials i buy and how i choose to teach it? i guess it will all become clear soon enough, i just don't wanna get bogged down with creating materials if all of e bo young's are crap. is it possible to stray from their curriculum if it makes no sense? i guess most importantly, is it possible to buy decent teaching materials and books in busan?

If the school is brand new, you can expect to have many problems with administration and communication. The school I was with didn't even have any breaks between classes! So I was teaching 8 classes back to back to back without even a 5 minute break. It was insane now that I think about it.
Also, you can't "buy" materials, YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT yourself. This takes an extreme amount of time and creativity that even experienced teachers have problems with. |

I worked one a day a week at a GnB hogwan for over a year. They knew the books were crap, so they let me do whatever I wanted. I took "Lets Go" and "English Time" and photopied like there was no tomorrow. Koreans usually only care about copyright laws if it is published by a Korean. Just do whatever the books do, but dumb it down and take it slow. |

This is a joke, right? .............RIGHT?!?!
If I were you I'd go out right now and have a terrible car accident and suffer a painful, horrible back injury. Bad enough that you will have to regretfully not be able to come to Korea for a couple of months. And then tell E Bo Young Babysitting Club, that as sad and dissapointed as you are, you must pass up this position with them, and that you wish them well in finding another suitable teacher to replace you. |
