So we're thinking of running as soon as we get our next paycheck - the day after we get paid or the day after that. We wonder if there's anything our employer can do to stop us at the airport. Our contract says that we have to pay back the recruiter's fee if we break our contract, and we assume they'll just take that out of pay owed us from the period between the end of the pay period and the actual pay date. But might they claim that it's money owed and keep us from leaving the country somehow? We have a highly evil boss and put NOTHING past her. She would set dogs on us if she could, so we're paranoid. Even if we're detained and released, we could still miss our flight and be unable to get another one. We may not be able to get out of the country before they notice we're gone, and we can't afford to be stopped at the airport for any reason. Has anyone heard anything about someone getting in legal trouble for running? |

If you kindly explain what the hagwon owner did or is doing to you, people including myself will be more than happy to help. |

Quitting is NOT a criminal offence and they can't stop you for a simple breach of contract.
Leave home on the Friday night after work. It will be Monday before they notice you are gone. Be sure to send a post here when you get out of the country to let evenone else know where you are leaving from.
If they realize that you are leaving AND they are really stupid it IS possible that they MAY be foolish enough to call the police and file a false police report of you commiting some crime.
This will enable immigration to delay you pending the investigation.
IF that happens, CALL your Embassy for assistance.
You are entitled to consular and legal representation. |

Since this gets asked rather frequently, maybe we should put a sticky or a FAQ section for "How to Pull a Runner."
Note to the OP: I'm sure you've already made the decision to go, but there are other options if you wanted to stay in Korea.
I ran 5 years ago, because I was in your exact situation and thought I had no choice, but I really wish I'd had some solid information and the ability to think on a clear head - I was so panicked that my director would try to ruin me that I spent a fortune to get out asap.
In any case, good luck. |

OP- after you leave, post the name/location of the school and what happened. Maybe it'll help someone else avoid that hellhole. |

yes it'd be nice if there were a faq sheet about pulling a runner because i'm sure a lot of the same questions get asked about it a lot.
we have thought about staying in korea and just working at a different school but we're afraid we'd end up not liking it there either. plus, there are a lot of things going on back home that we really don't want to miss out on. our decision is 2-fold: not being able to deal with our bosses and the way they run our school and wanting to be able to participate in certain things back home.
so yeah, we've definitely made up our minds.
thanks for the comment |

So they can go to the trouble of sueing you in Korea but you will not be here and it is NOT enforcable anywhere else... slander / liable away.
And as an afterthought.... truth is considered a defense against liable/slander anywhere in the civilized world (meaning outside Korea). Only in Korea is truth not a defense. |
