It all started with a faint sound of sobbing outside of my classroom.
It was time for lunch, so I headed out the door looking forward to sampling the delicacy of the day.
As I exited my room the sobbing was somewhat louder and I noticed a couple of suspicious looking students in the hall.
They seemed to be teasing a student in the bathroom, so I decided to break it up and send the munchkins on there way.

I discovered that the students weren't causing trouble, in fact quite the opposite. They were trying to help a student in need.

Apparently, the youngster(grade 1) was experiencing a rather unique bathroom conundrum. The students were trying to explain to me, in Korean and with hand gestures, that the troubled student had done number 2 and had no tissue in his possession or so I thought.

I returned to my classroom in order to retrieve a roll of TP and attempted a pass over the door. This resulted in a more intense cry of desperation followed by more explanations in Korean accompanied with wild and vivid hand gestures that made me cringe.

So I recruited a Korean teacher to help sort out the problem.
After a brief verbal exchange between the K Teacher and the student the mysterious problem was solved.

The grade one student had tissue but he forgot how to use it.!?! Shocked

Yikes!

I'll have to recommend to his homeroom teacher that he put "memorize butt wiping" at the top of his priority list. Shocked

There is a bit more to the story...

I neglected to mention the fact that the student claimed to have had previous butt wiping experience from the age of 6. However, after he finished up he suddenly forgot what to do. Shocked

So, when the the K teacher refreshed his memory(didn't ask and don't want to know) it apparently all came flooding back. Embarassed

Luckily it's Chuseok and it will almost certainly be forgotten after the holiday. Laughing

One of my former co-workers had the worst luck...she was always wiping some little tykes butt. She taught the youngest kindy kids, and sometimes they would cry for assistance on the pot.

Even on vacation...I am not kidding. We were staying at a korean family hotel in Seogwipo, and the landlady's grandson was on the pot while she popped out to a neighbours...my pal found him crying on the pot, and had to wipe his butt to get him to stop crying. She was a good sport about it, luckily.

I once heard an aunt explain it this way to my cousin (who just had a baby).
Hate to say it, but- someone once wiped your butt (when you were a baby). Now it's YOUR turn.

I had a student who had the runs one time. His mother had to drive to the school to wipe his butt for him.

OK, I don't have a Masters in early childhood development or anything, but aren't you supposed to finish toilet training your child before you send them to school on their own?

Do kindy and elementary school kids need someone to wipe their butts for them in the West? I seem to remember having those matters well in hand by the time I started kindergarten. Am I missing something here?

Hub of Asia, my ass.

Equally bad, I had another student, six year (Korean age) old girl who wet her panties at the lunch table.
