A great thing to do. Everyone who's ever gone have said they've joined it. This year it just happens to be on the same weekend as Chuseok. Wonder how that will affect attendance? |

Will it actually be going on during the 5th, 6th and 7th? Or will one day be set aside for Chuseok? |

Nope. Everyday.
There are artists from Venezuela, Russia, Turkey, Thailand, etc. It's a major international festival. |

I'm actually heading up there tomorrow moring with a few folks and when I tell my Korean friends that I'm going they keep asking me why, that it's so boring, but we'll see. Hopefully traffic isn't that bad since I have to take the bus from Deagu to Andong.

I'm planning on heading there on Friday (also from Daegu). Wouldn't the train be easier considering Chuseok traffic?
Also, is this a one or two-day sort of thing? Should I be planning to stay overnight? Or can I see everything in one day? |

The train was all full up at that time, so the bus was the only option we had left to get there. I've got an iPod, I can tune it all out and wait, as long as the temp on the bus is pleasant. We're planning on staying at least one night, maybe two if we have a good time. It's a long weekend, no reason not to.

There are also buses leaving from Buk-bu station. Absolutely worth the trip - was a fabulous day! Lots to see and very well organised.
Also, they have plenty of festival info in English when you arrive at Andong bus station.
Enjoy! |

Actually, that was last year's schedule. This year, the troupes are from Poland, Mexico, Costa Rica, Latvia, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, China, plus some Japanese teams and all the various maskdancers from around Korea.
There are events at the festival site in Andong, as well as at Hahoe Village, and a bus runs regularly between the site and the village. |

I've just returned from Andong where I spent three days at the festival. It was a good time. As people have mentioned, there are three different sites where events take place: Hahoe Folk Village, the main festival site, and a pedestrianised bit in Andong town centre.
All in all, I enjoyed it very much and thought the scope of the thing was impressive. Luckily I had my own car so transportation wasn't an issue. The performances at Hahoe Village were by far the most enjoyable, as the setting added to the atmosphere. The main festival site had loads to do for kiddies like make your own (insert art and craft here) and loads of yummy places to eat (pig roast barbecue ... mmmm). The city centre had mostly dance workshops and amateur singing contests and such ... I enjoyed that the least.
One thing I have to say ... I thought the thing was a MASK dance festival, where different countries would put on a dance featuring, well, indiginous masks. Not so. The dances from the various countries were interesting, just not what I had expected. I had come from Jinju Lantern Festival before Andong, and I must say I enjoyed Jinju better. Still, a great way to spend my Chusok holiday. |
