| i would like everyone's opinion on this topic. i'm korean living in america, so my friends are korean, i have never been to korea (except at birth) and i will go next year. my friends tell me that a huge problem in korea is american guys having promiscuous sex with korean women, they say this problem is really bad. i've never seen anyone in the discussion forum, or on this website bring this up. though this problem does not suprise me (knowing the mentality of americans is usually based on sex and money considering the culture they are from) i just want to hear your input, do you guys feel this is right? i understand it takes two to tango, but this still, in my opinion, does not justify the situation. of all my american friends, it seems like anytime they can get an easy lay (the victim being unconcious or not) they pounce, pretty fucking pathetic. i'm not trying to be racist, i'm just trying to understand how this could possibly be justified |

it's not exclusive to Americans or America.
Not pointing the finger, but most of the folks in Korea teaching English are Canadian, so when you see a dumb-ass white guy doing dumb-ass stuff, you can make a pretty good guess as to where they're from.
But I sort of wonder, too, how people hear about Korea. I mean, for all the drunk frat guys, and all the flag waving _________ns, what makes them think about coming to South Korea?!? Why not stay at home, work at Wal-Mart, and hit on the locals there?

hey, you can deny it all you want, but i grew up in america, i know what this culture is based on, and i know why a majority of americans do what they do. im not saying some koreans arent like this, but i just wanted to see how you respond when the obvious facts are put in front of you |

If you spend all your time at Itaewon, or if you hang out near American bases, then sure, you'll meet undesirable Americans. But that was a stupid generalization to make. I mean, look around . . . you've got massage parlors and business clubs stocked with South East Asians, you've got people of all nationalities and ethnicities (foreign AND Korea) running around trying to get a piece . . . it's not an American thing.
Maybe you read a few unflattering news articles about the US before you came to Korea, but I recommend you wake up and grow up. |

it's an american influence, this is what happens when a counrty "americanizes," it becomes individualistic, materialistic, and people begin to care more about stupid things like pop culture |

| You're making a common mistake. You're pretending Korea was a bastion or decency, a beacon of morality, before American influence. Prostitution, materialism, and corruption are rife in all societies, especially those influenced by Confucianism. Sure, you look around and see ENglish signs and western stores, but you have to dig deeper if you want to talk about becoming "Americanized." Globalization is a big issue, true, but the things you're talking about are as Korean as Kimchi. |

It's a good thing Japan civilized this place, for God only knows what Korea would've been like without the Japanese (that were invited here, by the way) introducing Western medicine, infrastructure, law and order, et al - no need to hate the Americans, and the Ethiopians, and Australians, and the South Africans, and god-can-only-recall who else saved your cesspit from the North Koreans.
