Seems to have worked for Mel Gibson.

Perhaps...but then Mel wasn't an elected public official from the "Family Values" party (which we get reminded of at every political opportunity) who betrayed the public trust with trying to seduce teenage boys and continue meeting up with at least one of them:

E-mails Show Foley Sought to Rendezvous with Page
October 02, 2006 12:14 PM

Brian Ross and Maddy Sauer Report:

In addition to explicit sexual language, former Congressman Mark Foley's Internet messages also include repeated efforts to get the underage recipient to rendezvous with him at night.

"I would drive a few miles for a hot stud like you," Foley said in one message obtained by ABC News.

The FBI says it has opened a "preliminary investigation" of Foley's e-mails. Federal law enforcement officials say attempts by Foley to meet in person could constitute the necessary evidence for a federal charge of "soliciting for sex" with a minor on the Internet.

Maf54: I miss you lots since san diego.
Teen: ya I cant wait til dc
Maf54: Smile
Teen: did you pick a night for dinner
Maf54: not yetbut likely Friday
Teen: okill plan for Friday then
Maf54: that will be fun

The messages also show the teen is, at times, uncomfortable with Foley's aggressive approach.

Maf54: I want to see you
Teen: Like I said not til febthen we will go to dinner
Maf54: and then what happens
Teen: we eatwe drinkwho knowshang outlate into the night
Maf54: and
Teen: I dunno
Maf54: dunno what
Teen: hmmm I have the feeling that you are fishing hereim not sure what I would be comfortable withwell see

Foley resigned Friday after ABC News questioned him about the Internet messages.

He says he has checked into a rehabilitation facility to deal with alcohol and behavioral issues.

So it's gone from "harmless, "overly friendly" emails according to the GOP at first, to Foley's icky IM messages and actually having met upwith at least one page.
I'm betting this stuff has been going on for a long time with this guy.

But what were his GOP buddies thinking when they decided to sweep Foley's behaviour under the rug in 2001, 2003 and apparently even this past spring?
Some have suggested they kept him on as someone "controllable" when it came time to vote on certain issues.

I think everyone here will be relieved to know that this is actually all the fault of the Democrats and the librul media.

I regret (for you anyway) that you are unable to disagree with others without generalizing and then simply calling them "liars."

You are not going to get any arguments from me with respect to your interpretation of this, which is virtually the same as my own -- except for a perhaps minor objection about the generalizing you and two or three others are engaging in here. I want Foley put down swiftly and severely, publicly, and made an example of that no one might soon forget.

There ought to be a special provision compounding your punishment if you are an official who, through actions of this nature, brings discredit not only to yourself, but who also calls into question the integrity of the govt itself.

In any case, it looks like Foley's atty is going the usual way, which, ironically, tends to play on traditional leftist sympathizing for the perpetrator...

I think this is a misreading of what really is going on.

I only meant to point out that his lawyer is playing every card he has got (and this is not really news) and that one of those cards is the left's tendency to sympathize with the perpetrator and muddle the issue -- like the attempt to turn the Menedez brothers into the victims and not the perpetrators, if I recall correctly.

It's starting to look like "Forced Out Of The Closet Month" in political circles these days:

W. Va. Lawmaker Embarasssed by Photos

By LAWRENCE MESSINA
The Associated Press
Wednesday, October 4, 2006; 11:52 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A state senator said he is evaluating whether to continue his bid for a second term after a Charleston television station aired revealing pictures of him last week.

"My family has urged me not to withdraw from the election and I will work with them to make a decision in the immediate future," State Sen. Randy White, a Webster County Democrat, said in a letter to newspapers in his district.

An apologetic White also wrote that he was "shocked" and "horribly embarrassed" after WCHS-TV aired photos depicting him and at least two other men wearing only body paint.

"The pictures were taken approximately two years ago in private and were stolen from my personal computer," said White, 51, a married father of three. "I am not sure why they were given to the media, but I must assume for obvious political reasons."

WCHS said it received the photos anonymously on a compact disc. The various photos, censored by the station, were shown for about 80 seconds during a 5-minute news segment alleging White was the apparent victim of a blackmail plot. The station aired the segment during several newscasts last week.

White did not mention extortion during a brief Monday interview with The Associated Press or in Tuesday's letter. White wrote that he had been working with his family to overcome a "personal identification situation" and to overcome depression for which he has been treated through medication for over a year.

"I am a religious person and have been for some months praying to God to help my family and me through this tragic and troubling episode in my life," the letter said.

In its news segment, WCHS said it had reported the disc and its contents to the FBI.

White served three terms in the House of Delegates before winning his seat in the 11th Senate District in 2002.

Republican Harold "Pete" Sigler is challenging White in the November election. Sigler did not immediately respond to messages requesting comment Tuesday.

Its sad to see that once again the best that the Dems having going for it are Republican mishaps. Its as creative as Canadians defining themselves as not being American. Its a miserable game when your opponent can't get his ass off the floor.
