I dont know much about this stuff.. but..

when it says.. 3000:1 contrast.. the higher the better right?

most pdp are now at 10000:1 3x better?? I dont know..
is the contrast ratio really important for viewing pleasure?

854x480 resolution?? is that really good?

sure size matters when watching movies.. without a doubt..
but.. contrast, resolution is also important..
what do these things mean..? and how important are they??
cheers.

The Panasonic AX100U now that looks UNREAL!!!

No, you're right, 854*480 is on the lower end. That's why I showed it, so you'd have an idea about how good the very low end projectors look. Most projectors these days are 1280*720. If you want to spend more, you can get full 1920*1080 projectors.

The Panasonic you mentioned is one of this years hot sellers in the budget (sub-$3500) market, and by all accounts it's very nice.

But, in any case, what I would suggest is viewing a few decent projectors and PDP/LCDs to get an idea which picture you really prefer.

5 years ago, I bought a 2000 lumen XGA projector for a computer centre where I used to work. That thing lit up the place even with the lights on despite not being mounted on at the time.

I became a fan of projectors and bought myself the last of the movie projectors. We enjoyed watching wide screen on it until the lamp died and we couldn't find a replacement for it. Dad ended up buying a Dell as a replacement hahaha!

Projectors are awesome....when the room is dark. If movies are indeed your thing then its a no brainer, get a projector and a PROPER screen and you're set. The quality is still not as good as LCD because you're watching the same thing only bigger. Would I buy another projector? Not for myself here in Korea as I already have a 30" monitor, but I will definitely get a better one to replace the Dell back home. My family don't really watch that much movies, but its great when we have guests and friends over.

Otherwise, a good TV is so much brighter, sharper and livelier.

My admittedly ghetto rig was 1.8 million everything included. (Again, would have been cheaper outside Korea. Damn tariffs.)

For more info, check www.avsforum.com and www.projectorcentral.com.

So what projector are you using?

It's an LG RD-JT 92. It's basically a clone of the Infocus 4805. It's a 480p projector, which I realize is not hi-def, however, living in Korea necessitated that I compromise a few things. If I had been living in America when I was buying, I probably would have gotten the Panasonic AE-900, but, such is life. Anyway, here's why I bought it:

1: Price. Projectors just cost more here, period, and the 720p projectors were out of my price range (ie, the wife wouldn't let me go over 2 mil.)

2: Video source. Even though it's only 480p, it works well enough for me since it matches up very well with dvds. I don't have any kind of hi-def source material at the moment, so even if I'd bought a 720p projector, I wouldn't have gotten the full benefit of it (right now.)

3: Quality. The Infocus 4805 is/was a really hot projector over at avsforum.com and this one supposedly beats it in picture quality. Whether that's true or not, I can't say, but I'm happy with the picture I'm getting out of it. Also, from where we generally sit, there is no visible screen-door effect at all. I have to get around 5 feet from the screen to notice visible lines, which isn't bad at all. And it's really, really quiet. Great little machine.

There's always the option of buying used. And no, it's not the same thing as buying a used car ('buying someone else's problems'). There are two kinds of "used" projectors: 1) 5-yr-old relics that have been used, abused and smoke-stained to hell at Korean hofs & sleazy Hongdae dives, and 2) last year's latest & greatest projector that some Korean AV "mania" [sic] unloaded because he's got to make space for this year's latest & greatest projector. PM me with a model you like and I'll look around.

It is... just so weird. For some reason, the Wife Aggravation Factor kicks in much, much earlier cost-wise with projectors than it does with big slabs of flat-panel display that cost 10x more than your parents' most expensive TV ever did. The grim fact is, wives/girlfriends are likely to look at a 42" LCD TV selling for 4 million won and say, "duh... okay! everyone's got one, why not us!", yet regard a better projector & screen setup like you're asking her permission to blow 3 million won on booze & hookers. I just don't get it. But I know that's the way it is.

Simple really, TVs are easier and quicker to use than projectors.

They also don't like a remote with too many buttons.

Ah infocus, nearly bought that one. Are they still any good or has everyone overtaken them yet?

Judging by the screenshots, it looks pretty good.

I tend to spend big money on toys like these.

OK, I'm getting a projector Laughing

Not several million won worth of easier & quicker. Besides, I thought women tended to be frugal & careful with money. I thought wives were expected to be.

I agree projectors are a bit more complicated, but my wife doesn't have any problems using MY projector when I'm not around. Damn her!

Thunndarr, look at the prices for your projector these days. Under 1 million won.

http://www.bb.co.kr/main/pd/pd_list.php?cid=020310040&st_i=comp&st_p=0&ckcomp=LG%C0%FC%C0%DA

What's the difference between the 2004 & 2005 models?

Oh yeah, when you or anyone else is ready to pull the trigger, you can PM me about best prices not only on used models, but new ones as well. I've got friend who've managed to beat the internet malls on lots of items, and have also gotten ahold of certain models not even mentioned on Korean websites except in the salivating "Golly, look what those lucky Japanese/Europeans got! Shocked" global industry product reviews.

Which is why I never browse those kinds of sites after buying something. Ah well, that's the market.

Hey guys. You're starting to sell me on projectors again. However, here's the situation. We're thinking of buying or junse (keymoney) an "aparteh". How does the cabling work? If you've ever been in Korean apartment buildings you'll notice that it might be a challenge to run the cables through the ceiling.

What solutions are there for cables? If we junse, we can't start drilling holes!

P.S. Big Bonus Question! Any way to buy one of these projectors in Canada and have a parent or friend ship them to you here sans duty, for personal use?
