Will they reject people with a felony in some white collar crime and accept people with a misdemeanor child abuse or misdemeanor sex crime? Is there any hint of a policy at all? -Jeff

Are there any E2 eliglible countries that treat sex crimes as misdemeanors?

I did a quick search and found this:

" * New York requires registration by sex offenders convicted of misdemeanor crimes including sexual abuse in the third degree, forcible touching, and sexual misconduct.

* Illinois requires registration by sex offenders convicted of the misdemeanor crimes of indecent solicitation of a child, sexual exploitation of a child, criminal sexual abuse, and any attempt to commit any of these offenses.

* Utah requires registration as a sex offender by persons convicted of misdemeanor crimes of lewdness involving a child and enticing a minor over the Internet."

I guess this means there are misdemeanor sex crimes.

They should require medical examinations when issuing work visas - like in Canada.

I was asked to get a medical exam but I think that was an EPIK requirement and not a visa requirement. I don't see the point of the medical exam. Start another topic on medical exams and I'll tell you more. (I like my topics separate.) -Jeff

EPIK requires a medical exam for regular applicants (September recruits) and a yearly medical exam before they renew your contract.

Interesting. If you get a police check, and you do have a minor midemeanour it becomes public knowledge. No privacy here. Your transcripts and records at universities where you work aren't exactly stored in the Deans office. The secretary of the English department keeps them in her unlocked desk, and that means she or any one else can look at them when they so desire.

The Gyeonggi School Board asks for Police Background Checks from all applicants. The only problem is getting one done from Korea. It's not like we can just go to the local police station. It was a pain to do but I understand the need for them.

Yes, you can "just go to the local police station". But I wouldn't bother, if you've just arrived in Korea.

EPIK (& SMOE?) also ask for Police Background Checks. I didn't require either a police check or medical last year, but definitely did this year. Korean Immigration are toughening up, & about time, too.

I got a free police check at Jongo Sam Ga Police Stn in Seoul, Korea, in September 2007, which took about 15 minutes, but I got lucky, & an English speaking Korean helped me. I just needed to show my passport & old ARC (which should have been grabbed by Korean Immigration twice on my exit from Korea on May 21, & again on August 14.) This police check was on my previous 12-15 months working in Korea, & may not be applicable to someone just arriving on day 1.

It ocurred to me that regardless of my clean record in Korea, I could be a mass-murderer in Australia. But then my passport would be flagged, & I'd theoretically be arrested either when trying to exit Oz or enter Korea.

Of course not. The teacher who claimed to be her killer lied about that.

I'm surprised that criminal record checks frequently aren't required. It reflects poorly on Korea.
