Hi everyone. Can you help w/ a few questions?
1) I have a degree but NO teaching/tutoring experience. Can I still get a job at a private or public school relatively easy?
2) Should I get a Visa on my own instead of thru the school so that I can switch jobs later if I am unhappy with the school? Or can I switch jobs regardless of how I obtain the visa?
3) Why do people say it takes 4-5 weeks for the first paycheck? Is it because they only pay once a month?
4) Do schools do much hiring in December / January? That is when I'm looking to go over.

To qualify for an e-2 visa, you need a sponsoring school. If you want to change jobs later you are at the whim of the employer as to whether they will 'release' you from your visa.

yup. only paid by the month.

yes that time is one of the peak hiring times, especially for unis/public schools. |

Thanks crazylemongirl. You're great!
But I heard that nearly everything closes down around the new year for several weeks. Are schools still open so I could be working?
Also, while over there, can a person get CELTA qualified (or another reputable qualification)?? I think it would be great to work on "official" certification while I'm there. |

Public schools and universities may have a winter break. Hogwans (private institutes) will still have classes, but they may operate on a different schedule temporarily.
Many institutes, schools, city govt.s will run some sort of winter camp. You may want to start out working one of these to make some money while you look for a permanent job. Just be careful about finding somewhere reputable that will pay you. Many institutes will also hire for the camp season and then keep you for the year. Just keep checking the job board here or possibly apply with a recruiter (I advise against it, but some others here can give you better advice in this area). |

This is not accurate.
First of all, there are two 'new years' in Korea. One of them is Jan. 1 and we only get one day off for that national holiday. The day after, the winter camp season begins--some start earlier, but most seem to start at this date. It's a peak time for hakwons because the public schools are not in formal session. Many public schools now run their winter camps, as well as the other private winter camps. University classes are about all that are not meeting.
You will want to have applied around Nov. for those camp jobs.
Second of all, there is a second new year holiday. It is on the lunar calendar, so migrates around some. It is a major holiday, three days long. I don't have a '07 calendar, so I don't know when it will occur...probably in February. Maybe this is what you were told about? |
