A Korean friend pointed this out to me the other day.
Toronto is full of Koreans who left Korea because they dont fit into Korean society, cant get a job, cant get married, got divorced, owe money, have no money, are hiding their money, are disabled, failed at love, failed at life, failed at school, are lazy, stingy, or just plain odd.
These people can easily find a second chance in Canada.
Canada will give them a home, food, money, education, and a job (if they want it), and ask for nothing in return.
My friend was a little frustrated, for obvious reasons. Mainly because he was a Korean who really wanted to distance himself from these losers.
I thought some people here might appreciate the story. |

Somehow this reminds me of Ricardo's theory of comparative advantage. |

That's interesting ... cuz I actually LIKE the Koreans in Toronto. Much more down to earth and worldly than the locals. |

I don't at all understand why your friend has a problem with people who have failed at life getting a second chance in another country. Sounds like he's a loser if he wastes his time getting frustrated about such innane crap. You sure he's not really frustrated because these people find another country more advantageous than his own? |

My ex-girlfriend (a Canadian Gyopo) and her family moved here because her dad was rich and could afford to buy his way into Canada and raise his family in a country they thought was paradise.
At least this is the norm for Koreans in Vancouver. |

I thought the same thing: He is complaining in the fashion as Koreans complain about foreigners in Korea.
I don't think of them as total losers since they did make their way to Canada in the first place to TRY to start over. I have to give them kudos for that.
What do the Koreans on this board feel at hearing this?
I would think it would touch a nerve in some ways...... |

It takes all sorts. Surely there are many different reasons for wanting to emigrate.
Maybe a person knows that nobody will listen when he tells the emperor that he has no clothes, so the easiest thing is to go somewhere that will suit your personality better.
Take my case: doing the corporate thing, 3 promotions in two years, but I got tired very quickly of sweating blood for an organization that was only interested in seeing a profit every quarter no matter what the cost. Life's too short. You can't change a culture, so if you don't like your situation then you should do something about it. I did, and it's working out pretty well so far.
Sure, maybe someone will associate me with some of the more unfavorable elements of the expat community, but that's no skin off my nose. I'm too busy getting on with my life and working towards my goals. |

If this actually works for them, then that's great. Besides, they probably want an environment that is not quite as stifled by tradition. |

A Korean who couldn't get a job, couldn't get married, have no money or failed at love goes to Canada for the better in these aspects...? That doesn't make much sense, does it? Especially, having no money is such a nonsense. You need enough money to move to Canada in the first place unless you are recognized for your specialized skills, which happens on a rare occasion. It's not that easy to get a permission for immigration. You need to prove lots of things and it's a very time-consuming procedure unless you have a fortune. Being a refugee might be a lot easier.

Ask for nothing in return..? For free? Charity? Ha ha.. I lost my words. If s/he talks about lack of competition in certain fields,(for example, it's much easier to get into such good universities here.) then I can understand but this sounds plain funny. Though if you want to have fun working for a chicken factory all day speaking Konglish, then why not...

Guess sometimes it's just fun to be frustrated... if anything, it was rich spoiled kids that I came across at times. |

Yeah, that was the point of the post. I recognized the similarity as soon as I hear him say it, but I had never heard any Korean pu it that way before.

You might be surprised, doggyji, at the many paths available to immigrants wanting to come to Canada.
Some of them dastardly. |
