Hey, my employer offered me a full install copy of WinXP Pro that won't allow the Windows Genuine (Dis)Advantage (WGA) updates for my system. Does anyone know of the latest software fix for this?
I'm aware that my copy of XP may not be legit, but I've read that this problem can occur for fully licensed versions of XP too.

Re-install windows using a different code. It checks your Cdkey code.

Use this code. It will get you around the genuine validation problem.

V2C47-MK7JD-3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J

This code is for windows XP pro. Don't worry about this being my code...it's not. It has been passed aound a bit..but it worked yesterday so it will work today.

The trick is never allowing WGA to install itself on your computer. I've got a Thinkpad X31 that came with Windows XP Pro; at first, WGA wasn't too much of an issue, but eventually it decided that my copy wasn't legitimate (the fricking sticker is printed on the bottom of the computer & I got the laptop straight from IBM!), after which it was a bit of a nightmare to get everything up and running.

So: when you check for updates, at the page where it says "Welcome to Windows Update!" and gives you two choices, "Express (Get high priority updates - recommended" and "Custom (Select from optional and high-priority updates for Windows and other programs)," copy this into your browser address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

This will get around WGA for your legally licensed copy of Windows XP. I have no idea whether it works for illegal copies or not, as I don't have an illegal copy, but it's worth a shot. It's very convenient that the WGA check is local and not server-side!

Thanks for the code.

There is an easier way to change the code, you don't need to reinstall windows. I'll have to dig up the instructions.

Changing the serial number probably won't work.

I don't think the keycode method will work long term. My copy is unlicensed and M$ wants almost $200 USD for the XP Pro license. Read *license* only, not box, manual, technically, not even new software as this version has only SP1 installed and none of the other updates. At present I'm going to do a net search until I find a software fix - and I'm staying away from the Updates site so Bill can't install the snooper program that tells the WGA site that my copy isn't licensed.
